Mission: The Inspiration

When Green Valley Auctions was started in 1967 by my parents, Leighton and Kathryn Evans, my father’s goal was simple: to provide for his family and be his own boss. He saw a need (a place to hold auctions indoors) in the community; he looked at his resources (he had a barn); and Green Valley was born with the first auction taking place only a few months after a bouncing baby auctioneer, named Greg (I was really cute) was born. I grew up working in the family business. Friday nights weren’t about football, they were about auctions. It was obvious at a young age that the business was in my blood. I would sneak into my sister’s room and load her dollhouse furniture into my Tonka U-Haul truck.

Now in 2015 (six years after I became sole owner and added the moving division), Green Valley finally has a written mission statement. While my parents never had a formal mission statement, the unwritten rule was to be honest, treat people right and do the best job possible. As I watch my kids work in the business, I realize what an impact those unwritten rules had on my life. I pray that this written mission statement will have such an impact on my kids, my employees and beyond.

How did Dad’s simple three-part goal in 1967 turn out? 1) To fill a need in the community: in 2014 we registered 11,389 bidders, served 812 consignors and sold 64,052 separate lots. 2) To be his own boss: in 1972 he started the Green Valley Book Fair which quickly outgrew the auction. 3) To provide for his family: now closer to 45 families between all the businesses.

Where did you grow up?

Cara Miller

Cara found us thanks to a job posting on Indeed. She has been with us since December of 2021 and has quietly and quickly found her place at GV. Cara spends a lot of time working on the catalogs each week, photographing and describing the items in the upcoming auctions (which we might add, she is very good at). She says she enjoys the fun & friendly work environment and that each week there is always something new to see. Cara has 3 sisters and a pet Turtle. In her free time, she enjoys cooking and metal detecting.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A veterinarian or a writer.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up living in Maryland and Pennsylvania.

Elizabeth Evans

Owner

Elizabeth came to Green Valley when she came to the Book Fair as a JMU student. She hadn’t met Greg yet but within the year a mutual friend introduced them to each other. It wasn’t long before their dates consisted of Elizabeth sitting in the front row of the auction house reading a book while Greg worked. Elizabeth has worked at Green Valley for 32 years now! She has filled every job position possible at Green Valley from creating our first website to cleaning the bathrooms. She says that her favorite part of being a Green Valley employee is getting to work with her husband all day. Elizabeth enjoys reading, sewing, gardening, organizing, traveling, cooking (of course!) and spending time with her 4 furry friends. On any given day you may find 1 (or all) of them at Green Valley. Elizabeth is well known for her delicious auction food and we like to say that her "love language" is making food for others and/or making sure they aren't hungry! We asked Elizabeth what she wanted to be when she grew up and she said, " I wanted to be a truck driver I think - but mostly I just wanted to work hard and make my Daddy proud."

Describe working at Green Valley in one sentence.

Working at Green Valley gives me a way to serve others and at the same time enjoy life.

Where did you grow up?

I grew up on a farm in Nottoway County - My daddy was a full time farmer and he worked for N&W RR full time as well. He never stopped. We raised corn, beans, some beef cattle and tobacco.

Jessica started working at Green Valley in November of 2021 when she decided that since her kids were older it was time to find something fun to do. She says her favorite part of being a GV employee is the fun atmosphere and that she has the flexibility to be at home when her kids get out of school. You will always see Jessica working on Thursdays & Fridays during pick up day, neatly organizing all of the wonderful items for their new owners to collect. She is always smiling and always willing to help someone. Jessica and her husband have 3 children, 1 dog, 1 cat and 2 chickens. In her free time, Jessica enjoys thrifting and looking for her next treasure.

What is your greatest strength that adds to Green Valley?

My positive energy.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

A ballerina.

Katie Siever

Front Office

Katie was on the hunt for a no weekends required job when she came across Green Valley. She applied for our office position and has been with us since April of 2021. She is helpful in any way possible and always looking for the next thing to do. When asked what her greatest strength is, she said that she is always willing to help wherever needed and we couldn't agree more! Katie has been married to her husband, Jaggar for 6 years now and they have 3 handsome, spunky boys named Brayden, Easton and Jaxon. Her favorite hobby is to spend every free minute she gets with her family. One day, Katie hopes to take her family on a cross-country trip out west so that she can see the beautiful Colorado Mountains.

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I always wanted to be a Registered Nurse at a hospital.

What is your favorite part of being a Green Valley employee?

I enjoy how they treat you like you are a part of their family.

Kent Botkin

Auction Coordinator & Cataloger

Kent's 20+ years of employment started when he asked Greg for a part time job. Within 2 months, he was offered a full time position and the rest is history. Kent brings much knowledge to Green Valley about local material, culture and the people who contributed to the art of the Shenandoah Valley & Potomac Highlands. At work and even as his favorite hobby, he enjoys researching and writing about the people and folk art of the Potomac Highlands. He also contributes great articles to the pages of the Highland Recorder Newspaper. When asked what he wanted to be when he grew up Kent's answer was "Ambulance Driver".

What's at the top of your bucket list?

Traveling to see the Northern Lights.

Matt

Move Team Member

Matt says that working at Green Valley is like joining one big family. He enjoys skateboarding in his free time. He lives with his girlfriend, Jasmine and their 2 cats. Matt is quiet, thoughtful and caring and says that he hopes his willingness to work is one of his greatest strength that adds to our Move Teams.

What kind of pets do you have?

I have 2 cats.

What's at the top of your bucket list?

To become un-naturally good at skateboarding!

Sam Evans

Sam has grown up working at Green Valley since he was big enough to be toted around in his mom's back-pack carrier. He enjoys the atmosphere at Green Valley and says that he 'really just enjoys this kinda stuff'. When asked what he wanted to be when he grew up Sam's answer was a simple, "This." He lives on the Green Valley Farm with his wife Sierra and their two dogs Ellie Mae and Dulcie. In his spare time Sam enjoys visiting other auctions, bottle collecting and hiking.

Sherri Rhittenhouse

Accounts Payable

Sherri has been at Green Valley for 13 years now. After taking a chance on a 'help wanted' newspaper ad and waiting 2 months for a call, she accepted a position at Green Valley. When asked about her job title she said that she's done most everything that needed doing. From mopping bathrooms to chasing runaway pigs in the driveway she says it's "as it should be". Sherri is married to her 28 year sweetheart, Dallas. They have 3 children and 2 grandchildren. From living in Churchville, VA to Tampa, FL she says she is the happiest in Grottoes. When Sherri isn't working in the office at GV you can bet you will find her in a river on a kayak or riding the back roads all over the Shenandoah Valley on her bike. When asked what her greatest strength is that adds to Green Valley she said "I care about the success of Green Valley and the associates I work with."

What's your favorite part of being a Green Valley Employee?

Watching the owners of Green Valley makes me want to be a better person.

At best guess, how many pieces of cake have you eaten since working at Green Valley?

12 years, roughly 15 birthdays per year (~180 pcs, unless I could sneak 2 for myself), plus 26 auctions per year (~312 pcs minimum, and yes sometimes I had 2 per auction day, don’t judge) so dang near 500 pcs of deliciousness (at a minimum, then there’s leftovers, weddings, picnics and meetings, usually with cake).

Sierra Evans

Sierra has been working for Green Valley since 2018. She is most always the one behind the camera (hence why you rarely see her picture). She is married to Sam and they live on the hill with their two very naughty dogs, Ellie Mae & Dulcie. You will sometimes find them accompanying her at work because they can't be trusted at home. Her favorite part of being a Green Valley employee is being able to come to work with people who really care about each other. When asked what she wanted to be when she grew up, Sierra said, "A puppy dog. That's what I used to tell my babysitter." In her free time, Sierra enjoys spending time with her family, being outside in nature & sunshine, plants and spoiling her niece Naomi.

What is your favorite hobby?

Spending time at RockTown CrossFit & collecting Pyrex & Plants

Chesney Whitmore

Auction Associate

Chesney grew up attending previews and auctions since he was a kid. His love for all things old brought him to start working at GV in May of 2021. Chesney is an only child and the proud owner of his blind cat, Bumper. In his free time, Chesney enjoys reading; especially nonfiction historical books. If you have ever seen him pick up his auction winnings it's usually several boxes of books. Chesney is very outgoing and loves talking with auction customers about their purchases or future hopes of purchases. He says his organizational skills work great here as he loves to organize lots for pick up day. He is currently attending UVA and spends his summer and spring breaks coming back to clock in at his favorite place.

What is the coolest auction item you have seen or handled through auction?

Pair of Dunhill large tropical fish themed Cigarette lighters (see picture).

What did you want to be when you grew up?

President. I memorized all of the Presidents and first ladies in 1st grade from a placemat my Grandmother owned.

Ryan Wilcher

Move Team Member

Ryan has worked at Green Valley for over a year now as an important part of our Move Company. He spends many days serving our local and surrounding communities by helping them move from one location to the next. Ryan also will spend a lot of time on the road for out of state moves. When not on the road as a mover, he can be found helping our auction crew by picking up estates and small consignments to bring back to our facilities. The farthest he has traveled for a move is to the "Windy City" of Chicago. Ryan is from Churchville, VA and had 2 brothers. He enjoys fishing in his free time.

What's at the top of your bucket list?

Finishing school!

What did you want to be when you grew up?

I wanted to be in the NFL.
