A huge crowd gathered in our auction house to see our galleries filled with spectacular items, and they were able to do so while enjoying a delicious snack or meal from Our Daily Bread Café. We were able to catch-up with old friends and make new friends during Preview and during the sale.
One large attraction was the historical items including the Civil War letters written by Confederate Soldier, Private Charles Wyndham Gay (1841-1862). He was well-educated and able to write detailed accounts of his time in the CSA until his death in battle on Malvern Hill, Virginia (July 1, 1862). His letters included quotations such as:
“Mr. Reed’s place over run with soldiers. Arrived at Strasburg after walking 26 miles. Slept in a crude little hut on the roadside. About 11 o’clock we heard Ashby’s cannons booming in the distance. Enemy stationed on a high hill about a mile from us, they opened fire on us as we were crossing this meadow and the shells burst fast and thick around and near us . . .”
The letters also included notes addressed to the family members of Private Gay concerning his noble death in battle. The letters brought a grand total of $6,076.00 after competitive in-house and phone bidding.
Also included in the historical items collections on January 12, 2018 was a large number of autographed 1940s boxing photos. Rocky Marciano was just one of the famous finds in this group, and the entire lot brought a grand total of $2,284.00 after phone and in-house bidding.
