Private Gay was a member of Rockbridge Artillery. He was killed in action on Malvern Hill, Virginia July 1, 1862. These letters were written to his parents, Charles S. & Margret (Erskin) Gay of Staunton, Virginia. He mentions Erskin Gay, brother of Charles W. Gay. Below are VERY brief descriptions of the contents of each of the letters. Charles Gay was well educated and able to write detailed accounts of his life in the CSA.
