Early American Pattern Glass, Book 1 and Much More Early American Pattern Glass, Book 2 Alice Hulett Metz Revised 1978. Collector Books, Paducah, Kentucky. Reviewed by Jeffrey S. Evans Originally published in 1958 and 1965, both of these volumes are currently out of print. The Early American Pattern Glass Society is working on revising the prices and republishing both volumes. Sets are fairly scarce and usually are priced at $100 to $200 per set when found in nice condition. Of course this will decrease if they are republished. They originally came in paper covers with a plastic spiral spine. Later editions have paper covers with square spines. They do have a tendency to fall apart from use. Watch for sets belonging to famous collectors as they bring a premium. These are first off the shelf when I'm trying to identify a pattern. The patterns are grouped logically and are easy to find if you have a general knowledge of pattern glass. The early flint patterns are at the beginning of each volume and the remaining patterns are grouped by pattern type, i.e. animals, floral, etc. Each pattern has a list of forms produced known by Mrs. Metz. While these lists are not all encompassing, they do for the most part only list pieces that were actually made. The prices should not be used as they are obviously outdated. But they do provide a humorous look back as highlighted by Mrs. Metz's valuation of the elusive Sandwich Vine goblet used as the frontispiece to book 1. "If any goblet is worth $500.00 this is it". As you probably know we sold the example from the Robb collection at our EAPG auction last fall for a record price of $10,500.00. | ||
