Auction Day Staff
Dan Pinnell
18th/19th c. Lighting Expert, Cataloger

Dan is called in to assist the Green Valley cataloging staff whenever 18th/19th century lamps and/or lighting devices require catalog descriptions or additional research for the specialty glass and lighting auctions.

In July 2002, Dan retired from a major Maryland police department and he and his wife Susan moved to the Shenandoah Valley ultimately purchasing an historic stone house. Dan has a great interest in early American life, especially lighting and glass. He has been collecting and researching early American lighting since 1995 with a special interest in pre-kerosene lighting devices, as well as burners, shades, illuminating fluids, and accessories. He frequently adds to his reference library which includes early catalogs, billheads, periodical advertisements, patent information, letters, and other materials that refer to or depict anything lighting related. Dan's research philosophy is, "Share your information, life is too short to withhold knowledge, even if it enables your fellow collector to attain a piece you could have had."

Dan is a standing member of the
Rushlight Club, The Historical Lighting Society of Canada, and The Early American Pattern Glass Society of which he is a past Vice President.

Dan and his wife Susan frequently dine by fluid and whale oil lamp and when they aren't busy restoring the house, they enjoy good food, fine wines, classical music and visiting with friends and family. And of course, there's always bungee jumping, class V white water rafting, and SCUBA diving.

Dan says that joining the Green Valley team is akin to being adopted by a wonderful family and that it has resulted in some of the best friendships of their lives.
