Lot 842 - VERY RARE BENJAMIN FRANKLIN SULPHIDE FURNITURE KNOB, colorless lead glass featuring an embedded sulphide profile portrait of Franklin which is signed "GOBRECHT" across the lower edge of the shoulder, mounted in its original Britannia or pewter cap with screw shank. This knob, which is also recorded in a slightly smaller version, is well represented in major glass collections including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Corning Museum of Glass, the Winterthur Museum, and the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum. Bakewell, Page & Bakewell, or successors, Pittsburgh, or possibly the New England Glass Co. 1826-1845. 2" dia, 2 7/8" length overall. Undamaged showing only a few very minute scratches to the surface. Estimate: $3,000 - $4,000.

Note: This left facing portrait of Franklin is based on the 1825 official medal of the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia. The design for the medal was submitted by the preeminent American portraitist Thomas Sully (1783-1872) and the die was prepared by Christian Gobrecht (1785-1844). The first medals were struck in 1826 and awarded to the 1825 Franklin Institute winners. Additional glass articles containing signed Gobrecht sulphides of Franklin include a cut glass decanter and tumbler, both of which are attributed to one of Bakewell's enterprises in Pittsburgh. The decanter is in the collection of The MMA and the tumbler resides at Corning.
Lot 843 - EXTREMELY RARE SANDWICH DAHLIA PAPERWEIGHT, containing two rows of seven deep cobalt blue pointed petals surrounding an inner row of seven strong goldstone petals and a complex cane center, all set on four green leaves and supported on a stem with two additional leaves, slightly concave base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1870-1887. 1 3/4" h, 3 1/4" dia. Very good as-found condition with the usual scattered scratches and minute bruises, should polish up very easily. Estimate: $800 - $1,200.

Reference: See John D. Hawley's The Art of the Paperweight: The Boston & Sandwich and New England Glass Companies, pp. 130, 131, for three closely related examples with goldstone petals and his observation that "Few documented specimens exist.".
Lot 844 - SANDWICH BLUEBERRY PAPERWEIGHT, containing two deep blue berries on a green four-leaf central stem, small dew-like air traps, polished concave base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. Second half 19th century. 1 3/4" h, 2 3/4" dia. Excellent condition with some small scattered scratches and a minute flake just above the base. Estimate: $400 - $600.

Lot 845 - NEW ENGLAND FRUIT ON LATTICINIO GROUND PAPERWEIGHT, containing five large red and yellow pears, four large green leaves, four small red vegetables and four small green leaves, small dew-like air traps, polished slightly concave base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. or New England Glass Co., possibly by Nicholas Lutz. Second half 19th century. 1 7/8" h, 2 1/4" dia. Undamaged. Estimate: $300 - $400.

Lot 846 - STEUBEN ATTRIBUTED BLUE AURENE DARNING BALL, open rough pontil end, not signed. First quarter 20th century. 6 5/8" long, 2 1/2" dia. Undamaged with a band of short scratches at the end of the handle and wear to the pontil edge. Estimate: $200 - $300.

Lot 854 - FREE-BLOWN PEACHBLOW DARNING BALL, glossy rose pink to light pink, open rough pontil end. These darners were reportedly made as cheap souvenirs at the 1892/1893 Chicago World's Fair. Probably Libbey Glass Co. or Mt. Washington Glass Co. Late 19th century. 6" long, 2 1/2" dia. Undamaged. Estimate: $100 - $150.

Lot 859 - CUT OVERLAY ARCH AND TREFOIL SPILL HOLDER, cobalt cut to colorless, plain polished rim, short plain stem, circular foot with punty-cut edge and star rosette-cut base. American or European. 1860-1880. 4 7/8" h, 3 3/8" dia rim, 2 3/4" dia foot. Undamaged except for a very small abrasion and two minute nicks to cuttings. Estimate: $200 - $300.

Lot 860 - CUT OVERLAY SWEETHEART FLASK, opaque white to red cased colorless, flattened ovoid form with a double heart and acorns on one side and a double rosette and acorns on the other side, punties and quatrefoils along the edges, panel-cut neck with a plain lip, polished pontil mark. Collected on Cape Cod in the 1940s. Possibly Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1870-1890. 7 1/2" h, 4 1/8" wide. Undamaged. Estimate: $200 - $300.
Lot 861 - CUT DOUBLE OVERLAY CIGAR HOLDER, pink cut to white cut to colorless, decorated with rows of punties and notches separated by elongated panels, factory polished rim. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1880. 3 5/8" long, 3/4" dia rim. Minor flake to mouth piece and rim. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 862 - CUT GLASS WHIMSY PIPE, light amber, bowl cut with a star in diamond design, notched panel-cut stem and ringed mouth piece. Late 19th/early 20th century. 5 1/4" long. Undamaged except for light loss/polishing to end of mouth piece. Estimate: $50 - $75.
Lot 863 - LUTZ TYPE SOUVENIR BRACELETS, LOT OF TWO, each colorless with multi-color ribbon twists and goldstone., According to Barlow & Kaiser, the Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. gave this type of bracelet away to little girls during the Sandwich July 4,1876 celebration parade. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. and others. Circa 1876. 2 1/2" and 3" dia overall. Undamaged. Estimate: $150 - $250.

Lot 864 - LUTZ TYPE STIRRER, colorless with multi-color ribbon twist, one end with knop finial, the other end flattened with twisted point/rough pontil mark. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. and others. 1870-1890. 5" long. Undamaged except for a minute flake to pontil mark. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 865 - OVAL HOBNAIL PAIR OF NEWEL POST FINIALS, opaque chartreuse, each with a polished top and appropriate brass mounts. Possibly Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1870. 7 3/4" long overall, 3" dia overall. Undamaged, slight marring to mounts, one mount poorly replastered. Estimate: $150 - $250.

Lot 866 - SANDWICH OVERSHOT BULBOUS PITCHER, blue with applied amber reeded handle, polished pontil mark. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1870-1887. 8" h, 3 1/8" dia rim, 6 5/8" dia overall. Undamaged except for a few minute flakes to handle ribs. Estimate: $100 - $150.
Lot 867 - OVERSHOT CHAMPAGNE PITCHER WITH ICE BLADDER, colorless, triangular rim, colorless applied twisted-rope handle which surrounds neck and splits into two terminals which each end in a pressed daisy design above the bladder, rigaree surrounds the hole. Fourth quarter 19th century. 10 7/8" h overall. Undamaged. Estimate: $100 - $150.

Lot 870 - STEUBEN ARTICLES, LOT OF TWO, consisting of a Bristol Yellow square swirled cold cream jar with reeded ground stopper, and a French Blue Shape 6358 reeded champagne, both with block letter acid-stamped signature. First half 20th century. 3 3/4" h overall, 2 1/2" sq, and 6" h, 2 3/4" dia. foot. Undamaged. Estimate: $100 - $150.

Lot 871 - LIGHT CRANBERRY CASED PANEL-CUT COMPOTE, bowl cut with 16 panels, hollow stem and foot with eight panels, crosshatch and star cut design under foot, polished pontil mark. Probably Bohemian. Fourth quarter 19th century. 9 5/8" h, 10 1/8" dia rim. Excellent condition with a light flake to top and outer edge of rim, a minor flake under foot, and some interior wear to bowl. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 872 - VARIOUS CUT GLASS ARTICLES, LOT OF SIX, colorless, consisting of a small syrup with silver-plate mounts, a small vase in a sterling silver stand, a flared vase, along with three additional articles. American and English. Primarily 20th century. Vase 5 3/4" h, 7" dia rim. Sterling stand with dents to foot, small dish with rim chip, others undamaged. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 874 - PANEL-CUT AND GILDED DRESSER BOX, deep cobalt blue, 12 sided, geometric and foliate decorations, polished base. Probably English. Mid 19th century. 2 1/2" h overall, 4 1/2" dia overall. Undamaged except for a small flake to cover interior. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 875 - PANEL-CUT ARTICLES, LOT OF TWO, deep cobalt blue, consisting of a footed 10-panel decanter with colorless facette-cut stopper and partially ground pontil mark, along with a footed eight-panel bowl with complex cut rim and polished base. Probably English. 19th century. 9 3/4" and 5" h overall. First undamaged except for a minute nick to one panel, stopper fits slightly loose, second with numerous rim chips. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 876 - FREE-BLOWN THREADED AND ENGRAVED PRESENTATION MUG, colorless with red threading at rim, applied reeded handle, engraved with a fern and wheat decoration surrounding "H. C. Angell / a present from / S. Griffiths" in fancy script, small rough pontil mark. Collected on Cape Cod. Possibly New England. Second half 19th century. 6 1/2" h, 4" dia rim, 5" dia base. Undamaged. Estimate: $100 - $150.

Note: While the names on this mug have not been positively identified, a Dr. H(enry) C. Angell, residing on Beacon St. in Boston, MA, in the second half of the 19th century has been located. Among Dr. Angell's most renowned accomplishments was being a founding member of the Boston University School of Medicine and starting The New England Medical Gazette. He was also a well respected author and patron of the arts.
Lot 877 - FREE-BLOWN MARBRIE DECORATED GEMEL BOTTLE, colorless with opaque white loops, flattened ovoid form with applied rigaree and base disk, plain lips, rough pontil mark. Second half 19th century. 8 1/2" h, 4 1/4" w. One lip polished, possibly during production, only a hint of wear to sides. Estimate: $50 - $75.
Lot 878 - VICTORIAN DOUBLE IVY OR PLANT STAND, two colorless pressed glass cups supported by brass chains on a verdigris-patinated cast iron ivy and floral molded standard on a gilded brass and black-painted cast iron circular base. Second half 19th century. 10" h overall, 4" dia base. Excellent condition with light wear to finishes. Estimate: $75 - $125.

Lot 882 - VERMONT GLASS FACTORY ONE DOLLAR NOTE, featuring an image of the factory, inscribed No. 1146 and dated Oct. 6, 1813. First quarter 19th century. 2 3/4" x 6 3/8". Very good condition. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 883 - HORSESHOE-FORM COVERED BOX, opaque white/milk glass, embossed horse's head on cover, horseshoes, horn and riding crop on sides of box, somewhat worn original gold decoration. Probably Alton Mfg. Co., Sandwich, MA. First quarter 20th century. 1 7/8" h overall, 3 1/4" x 3 5/8 overall. Cover with two minute flakes under rim, base with a 5/8" annealing crack at one corner. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 885 - BLOWN-MOLDED PAIR OF DESK BOTTLES, deep fiery opalescent, each of square form without ornamentation, ground rims, first with a period copper sander top, second with later silver-like cover. Mid 19th century. 1 1/2" h, 1 1/2" x 1 1/2". First undamaged, second with a chip to one corner and lower base. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 886 - VARIOUS BLOWN-MOLDED ARTICLES, LOT OF FOUR, consisting of a cobalt blue child's mug with simple enamel decoration, a fiery opalescent Oval Paneled Frames vase with gilt and blue enamel decoration, and a pair of blue opaline bottle-form footed vases with gilt and black enamel decoration. European. Second half 19th century. 3" to 8" h. Undamaged, wear to mug decoration. Estimate: $75 - $125.

Lot 887 - VARIOUS BLOWN-MOLDED AND PRESSED ARTICLES, LOT OF SIX, consisting of two colorless EAPG creamers, each with an applied handle, two vaseline blown-molded caddies, one with tin cover, other with Russian lettering under the base, along with two 20th century wall vases. 19th and 20th centuries. 3 1/2" to 6 1/2" h. Creamers undamaged, caddies with considerable chipping to rims, vases undamaged. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 890 - VARIOUS CRANBERRY GLASS ARTICLES, LOT OF THREE, consisting of a Gutatte pattern sauce dish, a panel-cut muffiner with EPNS top, and a shaded wide swirl pattern decanter with colorless facetted stopper which fits loosely. American and English. Late 19th or early 20th century. 1 1/2" to 7 1/2" h overall, 4" dia dish. Undamaged except for minute nicks to dish rim, muffiner top lacking tip. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 891 - MUZZLED BEAR POMADE JAR TOPS AND THREE OTHER ARTICLES, consisting of a translucent starch blue and a deep amethyst small size head, along with two commercial pungent bottles lacking lids and a single opalescent furniture knob. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. and others. 1840-1880. Various sizes. Blue head undamaged except for two minor flakes under rim, black head with normal moderate chipping to rim, bottles with wear, knob undamaged. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 892 - VARIOUS SHAKER LIDS AND STOPPERS, LOT OF SIX, consisting of an amethyst Christmas shaker with shedding surface, a Christmas salt and pepper shaker lid, and three early decanter stoppers. 19th century. Various sizes. Lid which is on shaker with splits, other lids very good with some surface wear, largest stopper with a few flakes. Estimate: $30 - $50.
Lot 893 - VARIOUS PRESSED AND BLOWN GLASS ARTICLES, LOT OF SIX, consisting of an amber barrel Christmas salt shaker, a contemporary amethyst pattern-molded cream jug, a fiery opalescent Hairpin footed bowl, and a colorless Giant Sawtooth fluid lamp and pair of Pittsburgh candlesticks. 19th and 20th centuries. 2 1/2" to 11" h overall. First two undamaged, Hairpin with numerous rim chips, lamp with a tooth and base chip, one stick undamaged and one with socket crack. Estimate: $50 - $75.
