Lot 524 - EXTREMELY RARE SMALL DOLPHIN SCALLOP BASE PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, unrecorded deep purple blue and opaque white with excellent resonance, each featuring a 12-petal socket and 16-scallop circular base with two pairs of concentric rings underneath, wafer construction. Examples have been observed both with and without wafers. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co., possibly Cape Cod Glass Co., or Mt. Washington Glass Co. 1860-1880. 6 3/8" and 6 5/8" h, 4" dia base. Virtually proof having only a single shallow chip to one socket petal and one underbase snap-ring flake, both standards with the usual annealing fissures and lines associated with opaque white glass. Note: A truly remarkable pair of candlesticks and the only two-color examples that we could locate. Their difference in height is due to the slight slumping of the stem seat of the shorter example. They are undoubtedly a matched pair as they left the factory. Lot 525 - HEXAGONAL PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, deep brilliant emerald green, each with thick-lipped socket, standard flared base, and wafer construction. One base of a slightly darker color due to thickness of glass. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7 3/8" h, 4 1/4" dia base overall. Undamaged except for a flake to the top of one socket, one with two open bubbles to edge of foot, other with a manufacturing chip to stem adjacent to wafer. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500. Lot 526 - DOLPHIN SINGLE-STEP BASE PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, translucent soft blue and alabaster/clambroth with only a hint of sanded/shedding to surface, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1845-1870. 10 1/4" h, 3 3/4" sq base. Outstanding condition, first with a very small open bubble with minute flake to one socket petal and a shallow chip under base, second with a bruise under one socket petal, several minute petal flakes, and one slightly misshapen (possibly polished) petal, both with normal mold roughness to lower base edges. Lot 527 - PETAL AND COLUMNAR PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, translucent starch blue and alabaster/clambroth with no shedding, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1865. 9 1/4" h, 3 5/8" sq base. Remarkably proof except for a very minor flake to one petal which does not disfigure the profile, open bubble to one socket interior. Lot 528 - HEXAGONAL CANDLESTICK, very unusual translucent milky plum purple, thick-lipped socket, standard flared base, wafer construction. Along with another example which is a match in form but of a slightly differing color. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7 1/4" h, 4 1/4" dia base overall. First undamaged except for a shallow chip and flake to base corner and the usual roughness to the snap ring under base. Second with a crack to socket. Estimate: $800 - $1,200. Lot 529 - PETAL AND LOOP CANDLESTICK, unusual slightly translucent milky electric blue, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7" h, 4 3/8" dia base. Socket with a small shallow chip to the tip of one petal along with a bruise and flake under another petal, otherwise undamaged. Estimate: $500 - $800. Lot 530 - PETAL AND LOOP PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, translucent soft bluish turquoise and alabaster/clambroth with no shedding, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 6 3/4" h, 4 3/8" dia base. First with a chip to one socket petal, second with an interior annealing crack from top to bottom of socket. Estimate: $500 - $800. Lot 531 - EXTREMELY RARE MIDWESTERN FREE-BLOWN AND PRESSED CANDLESTICK, colorless, deep gallery-rim socket with an applied triple ring at base, supported on a double-knop stem and lacy Hairpin base with a 20-bull's-eye-scallop foot, wafer construction. Midwestern, probably Pittsburgh. 1830-1840. 6 5/8" h, 2 3/8" dia rim, 3 7/8" dia base. Foot with a chip to two scallops and a few light flakes, otherwise undamaged. Estimate: $400 - $600. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7 1/4" h, 4 1/8" dia base overall. Very light flake to the tip of one socket petal and two shallow chips under petals, moderate very shallow chip under one base corner. Estimate: $400 - $600. Reference: Parallels B & K V, fig. 5262. Lot 533 - PETAL AND HEXAGONAL BASE CANDLESTICK, translucent soft blue with allover sanded/shedding surface, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7 1/4" h, 4 1/8" dia base overall. First undamaged except for a light flake to one socket petal, second socket with a shallow chip to one petal and a 1/2" annealing crack between two petals, base with a shallow chip to one corner. Lot 534 - PETAL AND COLUMNAR CANDLESTICK, translucent medium blue alabaster/clambroth with an overall sanded/shedding surface, wafer construction. Along with a similar example in poor condition. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1865. 9 1/4" h, 3 1/2" sq base. Socket with a slightly disfiguring open bubble to one petal, a very small bruise and a hard to see 1/4" imbedded annealing line in lower section, stem and base corners with some light bruises. Lot 535 - HEXAGONAL AND SPIRAL-TWIST STEM NEAR PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, canary, each featuring a thick-lipped hexagonal socket with twisted extension, a tightly twisted hollow stem, and a hexagonal foot factory polished underneath, two-piece construction without wafer. Probably New England. 1850-1875. 7 1/2" and 7 5/8" h, 4 1/8" dia base overall. Undamaged except for a minute socket nick to first and a shallow chip to foot edge of second, first with a 1/2" annealing separation to foot as made. Estimate: $300 - $400. Note: We have sold several examples of these scarce candlesticks, all of which have been slightly different. This is due to the fact that the stem twists were manipulated by the gaffer while the glass was still hot. This was a most unusual manufacturing technique which undoubtedly resulted in many imperfect and unsatisfactory examples being produced. Lot 536 - HEXAGONAL MASTER-SIZE CANDLESTICK, deep canary, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 10 3/4" h, 5 1/8" dia base overall. Excellent condition, socket with light flaking/mold roughness to two top edges, minor flake and small chip under base. Estimate: $200 - $300. Provenance: From an old California collection. Lot 537 - HEXAGONAL PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, canary, thick-lipped socket, standard flared base, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7 1/2" h, 4 1/4" dia base overall. Lot 543 - VARIOUS PETAL SOCKET CANDLESTICKS, LOT OF FIVE, canary, three with greenish tint, consisting of a pair with round bases, a pair with Loop bases, and a single with small hexagonal base, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. and others. 1840-1870. 7" to 7 1/2" h. Both pair with multiple chips to socket petals, bases undamaged, single with a chip under one socket petal and a chip under base. Lot 544 - DOLPHIN SINGLE-STEP BASE CANDLESTICK WITH FANCY SOCKET, translucent starch blue and alabaster/clambroth, extremely rare hexagonal socket with molded dolphins and shells, wafer construction. Lot 545 - HEXAGONAL MASTER-SIZE PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, translucent alabaster/clambroth with overall lightly sanded/shedding surfaces, deep socket with upper extension, wafer construction. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7 7/8" h, 3 7/8" dia base overall. First undamaged with a 1/4" imbedded annealing check at foot, second with a 1/2" bruise to inner rim of socket. Lot 549 - FREE-BLOWN AND PRESSED CANDLESTICKS, LOT OF TWO, colorless, each with a deep socket, first supported on a small stepped quatrefoil base, second supported on a hexagonal base, both with wafer construction. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1835-1860. 8 1/4" h, 3 7/8" dia base overall, and 8 7/8" h, 4 1/2" dia base overall. First with several shallow chips to lower steps plus a chip and several flakes under base, second with a 1/4" bruise to top of foot and a 1/4" manufacturing check to edge of foot. One undamaged except for a very minor base flake, one with moderate underfills to socket petals and bruise to stem seat, remaining two as is with damage. Estimate: $100 - $150. First with a section of the socket broken out and reattached, second undamaged except for a couple flakes to base interior. Estimate: $75 - $125. Lot 556 - HEXAGONAL PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, yellow green, two-piece construction joined without a wafer. Probably New England. 1860-1880. 7 1/2" h, 4" dia base overall. Lot 557 - HEXAGONAL MASTER-SIZE PAIR OF CANDLESTICKS, translucent starch blue and alabaster/clambroth with overall sanded/shedding surfaces, deep socket with upper extension, wiped wafer construction. Lot 560 - PETAL AND LOOP CANDLESTICKS, LOT OF SIX, consisting of a pair of yellow green, a pair of canary, a single clambroth, and a single colorless, all with wafer construction, first pair with no resonance. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. and possibly others. 1840-1860. 6 3/4" to 7" h. One of each pair above average with only a few flakes, remainder with moderate to significant damage. Estimate: $75 - $125. Lot 561 - VARIOUS CANDLESTICKS, LOT OF TWO PAIRS, consisting of a pair of opaque white Crucifix with no lettering and hexagonal bases, along with a pair with clambroth and starch blue stems mounted with brass sockets and bases, sand weighted. Second half 19th century. 9 1/2" and 9 3/4" h. First pair undamaged with normal mold roughness to bases, second pair with small loss to the tip of one applied spiral, numerous dents to brass, one detached at inner rod. Estimate: $50 - $75. Lot 562 - HEXAGONAL CANDLESTICKS, LOT OF TWO, canary, first with flared base and wafer construction, second with stepped base and stuck construction without wafer. New England. 1840-1870. 7" h, 4 1/4" dia base overall, and 7 1/2" h, 4" dia base overall. First with a flake to edge of base and a chip under base, second with a chip to upper edge of socket. Lot 563 - HEXAGONAL CANDLESTICKS, LOT OF THREE, pair of canary examples and a single translucent medium blue example, each of two-piece construction joined without a wafer. Probably New England. 1860-1880. 9" h, 4 1/2" dia base overall, and 8 3/4" h, 4 1/2" dia base overall. Lot 564 - HEXAGONAL CANDLESTICKS, LOT OF THREE, colorless, consisting of an assembled pair lacking their pewter inserts and a single with circular base and pewter insert, each with rough pontil mark/ring and of waferless construction. Lot 565 - VARIOUS PRESSED CANDLESTICKS, LOT OF THREE, colorless, consisting of a single hexagonal socket on loop base with wafer construction, and a pair of Thistle style on circular bases and lacking inserts. New England and Pittsburgh. 1840-1875. 6 1/2" and 9 3/4" h. Undamaged except for a flake under the base of first and a small spot of mold roughness to inner base of second. Estimate: $50 - $75.
