Fenton Collection Statement

From the late 1940's until shortly before his death in 2005, Frank M. Fenton was actively involved in the design of Fenton glass products. In the 1950's and 1960's, Frank frequented antique shops and shows, where he purchased many glass, ceramic and metal items for "design inspiration." When he bought a piece of glass, there was something about it that Frank wanted, be it color, pattern, shape, crimp, decorative treatment or some other element of design. Frank wasn't interested in "copying," but he was always intrigued by the possibilities of adapting aspects of others' designs to Fenton's production methods. He worked closely with mouldmakers Francis Lehew and Lynn Russi and, later, with designer Tony Rosena and decorator Louise Piper. Most of the glassware consigned to Green Valley Auctions, Inc. by the Fenton Art Glass Co. was purchased by Frank between 1950 and the early 1970's; many pieces will bear six-digit inventory numbers used by Fenton to keep track of Frank's purchases.
