Lot 1825 - PRESSED MUZZLED BEAR MEDIUM-SIZE POMADE JAR, translucent starch blue, marked "J. HAUEL & CO / PHILADA." under base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1887. 4 1/2" h overall, 1 5/8" dia rim. Outstanding condition, the head with a chip to one ear and a flake under rim, base with several minor rim flakes, an annealing crack off the rim which does slightly refract on the interior only, and a peculiar horizontal exterior only annealing line to the left side which has become imbedded with dirt. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,000.

Lot 1826 - EXTREMELY RARE SANDWICH MELON COVERED DISH, translucent starch blue, oval form, base with 11 ribs, cover with nine ribs, bent-stem finial, and rough pontil mark to interior, factory polished rims. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1870. 5 1/2" h overall, 4" x 5 3/8" cover. Excellent condition, base undamaged, cover with a minor flake to finial, and a shallow chip and two flakes to outer rim edge. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.

Note: This is the first example of this dish that we have sold. Barlow & Kaiser state "one of the rarest pieces manufactured by the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company." They also note that the Sandwich Museum knows of only two complete examples.
Lot 1827 - PRESSED MUZZLED BEAR SMALL-SIZE POMADE JAR, opaque black, unmarked base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1887. 3 3/4" h overall, 1 1/2" dia rim. Virtually proof having only a few light flakes to the rims and a hint of mold roughness. Estimate: $200 - $300.

Lot 1828 - PRESSED MUZZLED BEAR SMALL-SIZE POMADE JARS, LOT OF THREE, one opaque white and two extremely dark amethyst, each with an unmarked base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1887. 3 1/2" and 3 3/4" h overall, 1 1/2" dia rim. All heads are virtually proof with only a few rim flakes, each base with moderate to significant damage. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 1829 - UNRECORDED TWELVE-PANEL QUART DECANTER, deep amethyst with opaque white and pale blue imbedded frit decoration, applied bar lip, polished pontil mark, fitted with a metal-cap stopper. Extremely rare, possibly unique. Probably New England. 1850-1870. 10" h. Undamaged with some very light interior residue. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.
Lot 1830 - GOTHIC ARCH, PRINTIE PANEL AND LOOP CELERY VASE, bright canary, flared nine-scallop rim, hexagonal paneled stem and circular foot, wafer construction. New England. 1850-1870. 10 1/4" h, 5 1/2" dia rim overall, 4 3/8" dia base. Undamaged. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500.

Lot 1831 - DIMINUTIVE LOOP VASE, brilliant peacock green with unrecorded original gilt decoration, gauffered seven-flute rim, octagonal stem and square base, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 9 1/4" h, 3 1/2" dia rim overall, 2 5/8" sq base. Undamaged except for a minute flake to top of one base corner, some very light interior residue and minor wear to gilding. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.

Lot 1832 - SANDWICH TULIP VASE, deep brilliant teal, panels continue to peg extension, octagonal base, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1845-1865. 10" h, 4 7/8" dia rim, 4 3/4" dia foot overall. Moderate interior residue and wear, significant chipping under the base which must have occurred during manufacturing when the snap ring was removed. Estimate: $800 - $1,200.

Lot 1833 - LOOP VASE, brilliant electric blue, gauffered six-flute rim, hexagonal stem and single-step foot, one-piece construction, factory polished under base and to foot mold lines. New England. 1850-1870. 11" h, 4" dia rim, 4 5/8" dia foot overall. Undamaged. Estimate: $800 - $1,200.
Lot 1834 - LOOP VASE, strong bluish aqua, gauffered six-flute rim, hexagonal stem and single-step foot, one-piece construction, factory polished under base and to foot mold lines. New England. 1850-1870. 11 1/4" h, 3 3/4" dia rim, 4 5/8" dia foot overall. Undamaged except for a minute flake to one foot corner. Estimate: $800 - $1,200.
Lot 1835 - LOOP VASE, canary, gauffered six-flute rim, hexagonal stem plastered into the original marble single-step base. New England. 1850-1870. 9 1/4" h, 4" dia rim, 3 1/4" sq base. Undamaged except for a flake to lower stem point. Estimate: $150 - $250.
Lot 1836 - LOOP VASE, deep translucent moonstone with slight opalescence, gauffered eight-flute rim, hexagonal stem and single-step foot, one-piece construction. New England. 1850-1870. 9 3/4" h, 3 1/2" dia rim, 4 1/8" dia foot overall. Appears undamaged but under strong light there is a U-shaped interior only crack in the lower portion of the bowl. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 1837 - PAIR OF CIRCLE AND ELLIPSE VASES, amethyst, each with gauffered six-petal rim, hexagonal base, one-piece construction, factory polished lower mold lines and under base. New England. 1850-1870. 7" h, 3 5/8" dia rim, 3 5/8" dia base overall. Proof except for a minute nick to one base corner, one with a surface annealing line to top of foot which slightly refracts but has no depth. Estimate: $800 - $1,200.

Lot 1838 - EARLY PRESSED GLASS FURNITURE KNOBS, LOT OF 16, including seven fiery opalescent Rosette pattern examples, five additional fiery opalescent examples, and four colorless examples, all with screw shanks. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. and others. 1830-1850. 2" to 2 1/4" dia. Only one colorless example with a chip, others undamaged. Estimate: $100 - $150.
Lot 1839 - PRESSED GLASS CURTAIN PINS, LOT OF SIX, fiery opalescent, consisting of three pairs, each with original metal shanks. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. and others. 1840-1870. 2 1/2" to 4 1/2" dia. Glass with somewhat less than normal chipping to edges, three shanks with marring. Estimate: $100 - $150.
Lot 1840 - AMERICO-BOHEMIAN RUBY STAINED FOOTED TUMBLER WITH AMERICAN VIEW, octagonal form engraved across three panels with "Capitol Washington.", flanked by engraved scrolls, hexagonal foot. New England Glass Co. or Bohemian. Mid 19th century. 5 1/4" h, 3" dia rim, 2 7/8" dia foot. Undamaged except for a chip to the lower foot. Estimate: $800 - $1,200.

Lot 1841 - CHARLESTON TUMBLER, strong fiery opalescent with excellent pooling and swirling, six lower panels with plain wide band at rim, faint pontil ring. Probably M'Kee & Brothers, Pittsburgh. 1850-1870. 3 5/8" h, 3 1/2" dia rim. Undamaged. Estimate: $300 - $500.

Lot 1842 - COLONIAL FOOTED TUMBLER, strong fiery opalescent, circular foot with polished pontil mark. Probably Pittsburgh. 1850-1870. 4 1/8" h, 3 1/8" dia rim, 2 1/4" dia foot. One flake to top of foot and two shallow chips under foot, imperfections which are commonly associated with this pattern. Estimate: $400 - $600.

Lot 1844 - SIX-PANEL TUMBLER WITH APPLIED HANDLE, bright apple green, diamond etched "P. E. D. 1856" at rim, polished table ring, excellent resonance. American or English. 1850-1870. 4" h, 3 1/4" dia rim. Undamaged. Estimate: $150 - $250.
Lot 1845 - PRESSED PANEL TUMBLERS, LOT OF TWO, amethyst six-panel and cobalt eight-panel, both with polished table ring, first with some resonance, second with no resonance. Probably English. Second half 19th century. 4 3/4" and 4 1/8" h. First undamaged, second with two base flakes. Estimate: $75 - $125.

Lot 1847 - PRESSED PANEL TUMBLERS, LOT OF TWO, unusual milky amethyst nine-panel with faint pontil ring, no resonance, and a deep cobalt blue eight-panel with faint pontil ring, excellent resonance. American. 1850-1870. 3" h, 3" dia rim, and 3 1/8" h, 3 1/8" dia rim. First undamaged, second with several flakes under base. Estimate: $100 - $150.
Lot 1848 - SANDWICH THREADED HORN GLASS, pale green, engraved water lilies and cattails decoration, applied handle, polished pontil mark. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1880-1887. 5 1/2" h. Undamaged. Estimate: $50 - $75.

Lot 1850 - ARCHED-PANEL CUT CLARET GLASS, brilliant peacock green, bowl features four panels alternating with narrow finger flutes, panels continue over the stem, applied plain circular foot with polished pontil mark. American or English. 1850-1880. 4 3/4" h. Undamaged. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 1851 - SANDWICH THREADED HORN GLASSES, LOT OF TWO, colorless, cranberry and aqua threading, both with applied handle and polished pontil mark, along with an engraved teal green claret glass with polished pontil mark. Three pieces total. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. and others. Fourth quarter 19th century. 5 3/8" h. Undamaged except for several minute flakes to threading. Estimate: $75 - $125.

Lot 1852 - FINELY DECORATED OPAL MINIATURE EPERGNE, polychrome floral decoration with gilt edging, in two sections, ground peg and pontil mark, both inscribed "13." Possibly Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. Second half 19th century. 7" h overall, 5" dia bowl. Undamaged with minimal wear to decoration. Estimate: $100 - $150.
Lot 1853 - DECORATED OPAL DRESSER ARTICLES, LOT OF TWO, slipper and ring tree on foot, both with polychrome floral decorations, second with polished pontil mark. Possibly Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. Second half 19th century. 3 1/2" and 4" h. Undamaged with some light wear to decoration. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 1854 - SNOWFLAKE SPOON HOLDER, deep fiery opalescent, plain rim, circular foot rayed underneath. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1870. 4 3/4" h, 3 1/4" dia rim. Undamaged with some light wear to interior bottom which does not show. Estimate: $500 - $800.

Lot 1856 - HEXAGONAL FOOTED SUGAR BOWL WITH COVER, deep brilliant cobalt blue, bowl with short paneled stem and circular foot with polished pontil mark, domed cover with eight panels and hexagonal finial. Probably Pittsburgh. 1850-1860. 8 3/4" h overall, 5 3/4" dia overall, 3 7/8" dia foot. Polished areas to foot, rim and under cover, minor flaking/mold roughness. Estimate: $200 - $300.
Lot 1857 - PRESSED QUILTED DIAMOND CREAMER, deep green with a distinct area of red swirls, molded handle, hexagonal foot with eight-petal rosette underneath, moderate resonance. 1850-1880. 5" h overall, 2 5/8" dia foot. Small chip to handle curl and one foot point, otherwise only some mold roughness under the foot. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 1858 - SANDWICH PRESSED RIBBED MATCH TRAY, brilliant sapphire blue, rectangular form with a ribbed gallery, deep concave well, striker sides and a ribbed base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1860-1880. 1 1/2" h, 3 1/2" x 5" base. Undamaged except for a few minute flakes to gallery. Estimate: $200 - $300.

Lot 1859 - PRESSED ROMAN ROSETTE PLATE, medium amethyst, scallop and point rim. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1835-1850. 5 3/8" dia. Rim with one tipped point, small spall, and normal mold roughness. Estimate: $75 - $125.

Lot 1860 - VARIOUS PRESSED AND BLOWN GLASS ARTICLES, LOT OF THREE, consisting of a light blue free-blown hyacinth vase with rough pontil mark, a pressed fiery opalescent L/R #90 cup plate, and an unrecorded deep bottle amber pressed octagonal nappie with a sunburst center. American, the nappie is probably a bottle factory's attempt at pressed tableware. 19th century. 7 3/4" h, 3 5/8" and 5 5/8" dia. Vase undamaged, cup plate with heavy chipping to table ring, nappie with significant damage. Estimate: $50 - $75.
Lot 1861 - VARIOUS PRESSED GLASS ARTICLES, LOT OF THREE, canary, consisting of an arched-panel tumbler raised on six squared feet, and a pair of vases with elongated thumbprint arches and 14-point bases, each polished under base. Probably English or Continental. Mid 19th century. 4" and 6 3/4" h. Tumbler with a chip to one foot, vases with a flake to one base point. Estimate: $100 - $150.
Lot 1862 - PETAL AND LOOP CANDLESTICK, translucent starch blue and alabaster/clambroth with no shedding, wafer construction. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7" h, 4 1/4" dia base. Excellent condition, minor flake under one petal and a faint exterior only annealing line between two petals, another faint annealing line to one stem petal, the foot with just a hint of mold roughness. Estimate: $500 - $800.
Lot 1863 - PETAL AND HEXAGONAL CANDLESTICK, translucent cornflower blue, standard petal socket on a flaring hexagonal base, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 7 3/8" h, 4 1/4" dia base overall. Socket petals with two open bubbles to tips and two chips underneath, chipped open bubble to one stem petal, shallow chip off the snap ring under base. Estimate: $400 - $600.

Lot 1864 - PETAL AND COLUMNAR CANDLESTICK, translucent medium blue alabaster/clambroth, lightly sanded surface, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1865. 9 1/4" h. Undamaged except for a flake under the base and a minute flake under one petal. Estimate: $400 - $600.

Lot 1865 - HEXAGONAL CANDLESTICK, translucent starch blue, very lightly sanded surface, one-piece construction. New England, probably Mt. Washington Glass Works. 1840-1865. 7" h, 4 1/8" dia base overall. Undamaged except for a minute bruise to one socket point, some normal light annealing lines. Estimate: $200 - $300.
Lot 1866 - DOLPHIN DOUBLE-STEP BASE CANDLESTICK, translucent starch blue socket and alabaster/clambroth base, petal socket, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1845-1870. 9 7/8" h, 3 1/2" sq base. Chip to one socket petal, otherwise only a hint of mold roughness to base. Estimate: $300 - $500.

Lot 1867 - DOLPHIN DOUBLE-STEP BASE CANDLESTICK, alabaster/clambroth with extremely rare original gilt decoration, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1845-1870. 9 7/8" h, 3 1/2" sq base. Excellent condition, shallow chip under one petal and flake to the tip of another, faint annealing line between two petals which does not extend into the socket, the base with minor flaking/mold roughness to edge mold lines and a shallow chip underneath. Estimate: $300 - $500.
Lot 1868 - PAIR OF DOLPHIN SINGLE-STEP BASE CANDLESTICKS, canary, petal sockets, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1845-1870. 10 1/2" h, 3 5/8" sq base. An exceptional pair having only a minute flake under one petal socket and a hint of base mold roughness. Estimate: $600 - $900.
Lot 1869 - PAIR OF DOLPHIN SINGLE-STEP BASE CANDLESTICKS, canary, petal sockets, wafer construction, one with significant factory polishing under base to level. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1845-1870. 10 1/4" h, 3 5/8" sq base. Polished example undamaged except for a flake under the base, the other broken and repaired below the wafer and with a chip under one petal. Estimate: $200 - $300.
Lot 1870 - PAIR OF PETAL AND COLUMNAR CANDLESTICKS, canary, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1850-1865. 9 1/4" h. One undamaged except for a minor chip under base, other with one reattached socket petal. Estimate: $150 - $250.
Lot 1871 - PAIR OF HEXAGONAL CANDLESTICKS, canary, wafer construction. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1845-1870. 7 1/2" h, 4" dia base overall. Each with one or two light flakes to top of socket, one with a small chip under one socket corner. Estimate: $150 - $250.
Lot 1872 - HEXAGONAL CANDLESTICK, light amber, socket stuck to standard without wafer. Possibly New England Glass Co. 1860-1880. 7 1/2" h, 4" dia base overall. Undamaged with normal minor mold roughness. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 1873 - UNLISTED NEW ENGLAND HEXAGONAL SOCKET AND TWISTED STEM CANDLESTICK, canary, hexagonal foot, waferless two-piece construction, partial factory polished under base to level. Third quarter 19th century. 9" h, 4 1/8" dia base. Undamaged except for a small chip to an inner socket fin and normal flaking/mold roughness to interior of base. Estimate: $150 - $250.

Lot 1874 - PETAL AND LOOP CANDLESTICK, canary, wafer construction. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1860. 6 3/4" h, 4 1/4" dia base. Undamaged except for a flake under base, underfill to petals. Estimate: $75 - $125.
Lot 1875 - PAIR OF CRUCIFIX LARGE CANDLESTICKS, opaque white, each with hexagonal petal and cross socket and 12-sided base, two part construction with hidden wafer. New England. 1860-1890. 12 3/4" h, 5" dia base overall. One with two shallow chips under the petals, other undamaged with a small spot of exfoliation under base. Estimate: $100 - $150.

Lot 1876 - DOLPHIN SINGLE-STEP BASE CANDLESTICK WITH FANCY SOCKET, translucent starch blue and alabaster/clambroth, extremely rare hexagonal socket with molded dolphins and shells, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1845-1870. 9 1/2" h, 3 1/2" sq base. Broken and neatly repaired at wafer, repaired chip under base. Estimate: $100 - $150.

Lot 1877 - ACANTHUS LEAF CANDLESTICK, translucent jade green socket and alabaster/clambroth base, small size, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1865. 7 1/2" h, 3 3/4" dia base overall. Crack to socket, otherwise undamaged. Estimate: $100 - $150.

Lot 1878 - ACANTHUS LEAF CANDLESTICKS, NEAR PAIR, each with a starch blue socket and clambroth/alabaster base, very lightly sanded surface, standard size, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1840-1865. 9 1/4" h. Both broken and repaired, one at socket corner and the other below the wafer. Estimate: $50 - $75.
Lot 1879 - PRESSED LACY PERIOD GOTHIC ARCH AND PALM NAPPIE ON FOOT, colorless, variant with heart and leaf outer border, rim features wide scallops alternating with smaller shoulder-scallops, wafer attached to a most unusual swirled-rib knop stem and circular foot with an all-over strawberry diamond design underneath. Extremely rare, one of only two recorded examples. New England. 1830-1840. 6 1/8" h, 10 1/2" dia rim, 4 3/4" dia foot. Outstanding condition, the rim having only two lightly tipped small scallops and minor under-rim flaking/mold roughness, otherwise only two chips under the foot. Estimate: $3,000 - $4,000.

Provenance: Recently discovered at a New England on-site auction.

Note: Ruth Webb Lee recorded "Only two are known at this writing" which still holds true today. The second example was in the Hambidge collection which was sold by C. S. & S. It was included in Part III of the auction, held on October 28, 2000, and graced the cover of the auction catalog. An example of this nappie on a more traditional standard is at the Corning Museum of Glass; in addition the nappie exists without foot in the Toledo Museum collection and another was in the Elsholz collection (lot #393).
Lot 1880 - MIDWESTERN PRESSED LACY PERIOD "UNION" FRIGATE PLATE, colorless, octagonal with bold roundel and stippled point rim, stylized oak leaf shoulder. Probably Pittsburgh. 1830-1840. 6 1/2" dia overall. Virtually proof for this delicate rim, two roundels lightly tipped, another with an open bubble, along with some very minor flaking/mold roughness. Estimate: $500 - $800.

Nappie has a decided tilt. Probably Ft. Pitt Glass Works, Pittsburgh, PA. 1830-1840. 2 3/4" to 3" h, 5" dia rim, 2 3/4" dia foot. Rim with light top flaking, loss of two scallops, and numerous others tipped, base with three tipped petals. Estimate: $500 - $800.

Lot 1883 - LACY PERIOD ACANTHUS LEAF AND SHIELD COVERED SUGAR, deep violet blue with an opal bloom, octagonal with plain rim and circular foot, cover with pattern on outside only. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1838-1850. 5 1/2" h overall, 5 1/8" dia rim overall. Base is virtually proof having only a minor chip under one rim corner and another chip under the foot, the cover has been broken in two and glued and with several chips to rim. Probably Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1828-1835. 8 1/2" h, 3 1/2" sq base. One appears proof but under close inspection it has been broken and neatly repaired below the bottom wafer, second broken below the bottom knop and repaired with a bolt, large chip to one base corner. Very faint and hard to see 1" annealing crack off the rim which does have some dept but does not break the surface, still rings true, otherwise only a single rim flake and some light chipping/mold roughness to outer edge of table ring. Lot 1944 - VARIOUS PRESSED GLASS ARTICLES, LOT OF TWENTY-THREE, colorless, consisting of 18 cup plates, including seven eagles, along with five lacy period small nappies and bowls. 1828-1850. 3" to 6 1/4" dia. Most cup plates in above average condition with small chips, others average with chips. Estimate: $50 - $75.
