Lot 1718 - IMPORTANT SIGNED NEW ENGLAND GLASS CO. FREE-BLOWN AND PRESSED VASE, opaque white, free-blown deep trumpet vase with a folded rim and a ringed waisted probably indicating a second gather, attached by three wafers to a pressed lion's head and basket of flowers monument base which is signed on interior "N. E. G. Co. / E.R. S.R.", the base is without feet and shows opalescence at the lower edges. The interior bottom of the vase displays a rough pontil mark which would have occurred when the vase and base were being joined. New England Glass Co. 1830-1850. 10 3/4" h, 5" dia rim, 3 1/8" sq base. One corner section of the base has been reattached and there are small losses at the edges where broken, otherwise only a couple chips to the base corners. Estimate: $3,000 - $5,000.
Provenance: From an old New Jersey collection assembled in the 1940s.
Note: This previously undocumented and seemingly unique vase provides extremely important and irrefutable documentation in regards to the origin and production period of this trumpet-style of vase. While this type of vase has long been attributed to the Pittsburgh region, it has always seemed reasonable to assume that the style was also produced in New England. With the discovery of this signed example, we now have the evidence needed to add the New England Glass Co., and presumably the entire New England region, to the list of manufacturers of this bold and elegant form.

Lot 1722 - RARE MATCHING PAIR OF FREE-BLOWN SAUCER-BASE WHALE OIL HAND LAMPS, colorless, each with an applied handle on the globular font, pulled button stem, and applied "witch's hat" saucer base with folded rim, rough pontil mark. American. 1800-1830. 7 1/4" and 7 1/2" h, 5" and 5 1/8" dia base. First undamaged, second with a small crack to the font around the lower handle terminal. Estimate: $3,000 - $4,000.
Note: An intriguing example of early American lighting and seemingly unique as a matching pair. The interior bottom of each font exhibits a large nipple which appears to be related to the unusual process of pulling the stem from the font gather. Both handles were obviously applied by the same worker who had not mastered this task; demonstrated by the fact that both lower terminal curls were torn off and crookedly stuck back on when he formed the lower juncture.
