Lot 1304 - HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT RICHMOND, VA WINDSOR WRITING CHAIR ATTRIBUTED TO ROBERT & ANDREW MCKIM, originally owned by author and Virginia statesman William Wirt. Tablet crest above nine spindles, shaped yellow pine writing board with divided drawer and swivel candle support below, broad concave-shaped seat, raised on flaring bamboo-turned legs with H-stretcher. Later green paint. Inscribed "Wirt" in worn black paint under drawer and seat, marked twice with a 1943 museum accession number. Early 19th century. 38 1/2" h overall, 18 1/2" h seat. Excellent condition, minor repair to one drawer guide. Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000.

References: 1. See Hurst/Prown, Southern Furniture, 1680-1830, pp. 171-173, for two additional McKim writing chairs, one of which is labeled, as well as a discussion of the chair offered here.
2. Published The Magazine Antiques, "Windsor Chairs At Williams College," November 1944, p. 269, fig. 11.

Provenance: William Wirt (1772-1834), original owner. To Dr. William Wirt, Jr. (1817-1898), builder of Wirtland, Westmoreland, Co., VA. To William Dabney Wirt (1857-1930). Acquired by Philip Flayderman, 1929. American Art Association, New York City, Auction of the Flayderman Collection, 1930, lot #484. The Collection of Charles Milton Davenport. Bequeathed to The Lawrence Art Museum, Williams College, Williamstown, MA, 1943.

Note: William Wirt was born in Maryland in 1772. He studied law and in 1792 was admitted to the Virginia Bar in Richmond where he undoubtedly acquired his writing chair. He served as Clerk of the Virginia House of Delegates and chancellor of the Eastern District of Virginia before being asked by Thomas Jefferson to serve as prosecutor at Aaron Burr's 1807 treason trial. In 1817, President James Monroe named Wirt Attorney General of the United States, a position he occupied until 1829. His 12-year tenure as Attorney General is the longest in U.S. history. Although Wirt held numerous other important positions throughout his career, his 1832 bid for President was unsuccessful. Wirt was also a well respected author and was regarded for many years as the "chief man of letters of the South." Family tradition indicates that he wrote "Letters of the British Spy" (1803) on this writing chair. An extensive group of research material accompanies this lot, including a copy of the Magazine Antiques referenced above and a copy of the affidavit of ownership from William Dabney Wirt.
Lot 1305 - IMPORTANT SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA TRANSITIONAL QUEEN ANNE WALNUT TALL CHEST OF DRAWERS, dovetailed top with applied three-section carved rope and molded cornice, above a configuration of three over two over three graduated lip-molded drawers which retain their extremely rare original brasses, the case is raised on cut-out scroll feet which are extensions of the sides. Upper two tiers of drawers with spring locks and case with corresponding full dust boards, the lower full length drawers retain their original cabinet locks. Yellow pine, poplar and walnut secondary woods. Outstanding dry dark varnished surface which is very early and possibly original. Third quarter 18th century. 60" h, 38" w overall, case 35" w x 21" d. In a remarkable state of preservation, loss of right side upper molding, two drawers only with losses or breaks to top moldings, old repaired break to rear edge of right case side, minor losses to brasses. Estimate: $10,000 - $15,000.

Provenance: Descended to the present owner through the Shupe family of Chilhowie, Smyth Co., VA. Further genealogical research is ongoing.

Note: One of the earliest known surviving pieces of Virginia "Back-Country" furniture. While the extremely unusual base treatment of feet cut from the side extensions and without a front skirt appears on several simple Virginia storage chests, it seems to have no parallels in more sophisticated case furniture of the period.
Lot 1306 - EXTREMELY RARE PRESLEY CORDELL, LEESBURG, VA MAHOGANY TALL-CASE CLOCK, 8-day brass works, painted moon-phase dial signed "P. Cordell / Leesburg", flat-top hood with turned columns, case with chamfered corners and figured-grain waist door, applied reeded base molding raised on beehive-form turned feet. Note: A sideboard sugar chest of the same form is illustrated in MESDA's Journal of Early Southern Decorative Arts, Winter 1997, Volume XXIII, Number 2, p. 48, and is attributed to Robertson County which adjoins Sumner County to the west. In the MESDA article, Anne McPherson notes that a "Side Board Sugar Chest" was included in the 1825 inventory and account sales of the estate of Nashville cabinetmaker James B. Houston. The sugar chest offered here is from the same shop as lot #1336 in this auction, which is closely related to two chests (figs. 276 and 278) and a secretary (fig. 75) illustrated by Williams and Harsh in The Art and Mystery of Tennessee Furniture. Note: This monumental Wythe Co. safe cupboard is previously unrecorded and seemingly unique. While furniture with punched tins is traditionally associated with the kitchen and dining room areas, it seems reasonable to speculate that this cupboard might have functioned as a storage for linens or bed covers.
