Lot 1103 - PRIOR-HAMBLIN SCHOOL PORTRAIT, PROBABLY OF SAMUEL A. DAVIS, oil on board, depicting a gentleman with one eye dressed in a suit, "Samuel A. Davis" inscribed in pencil twice on verso, appropriate frame. The 1850 Massachusetts census records a Samuel A. Davis, Clergyman, age 40, living in Sterling, Worcester Co. Second quarter 19th century. 13 1/4" x 9 1/2" sight, 17 1/4" x 13 1/2" overall. Board is slightly warped, several small spots of in-painting, some surface abrasions. Estimate: $2,000 - $3,000.

Lot 1104 - AMERICAN SCHOOL PAIR OF CONNECTICUT PORTRAITS, oil on wood panel, old label attached to reverse of one inscribed "Mrs. M. A. Cornwell / No. 28 Trumbull St. / New Haven / Conn.", each subject seated in a painted chair with a draped background, each also displays a black painted 1" wide faux liner at edges, reverse of both panels with a reddish brown wash, one faintly inscribed "Springfield". Period gilded and painted frames possibly original. Mid 19th century. 35" x 28 1/2" sight, 41 1/2" x 35" overall. Excellent condition, both with minor to moderate yellowing to surface from cigarette smoke, one with some very light paint flaking, expected wear to frames. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500.

Lot 1105 - AMERICAN CARVED AND PAINTED TRAMP ART PICTURE FRAME, cross-style with complex six-step chip carved moldings, applied ornaments include hearts, potted ferns, flowers and leaves, in addition to "ANDREW PIADER" across the top and "MARCH 3 1932" across the bottom. Old crackled surface. Together with a 17-step gold painted star. First half 20th century. 32 1/2" x 27" overall, 21" x 15 3/4" interior. Excellent condition with a minor loss to three leaf tips. Painted on the reverse of an 1894 Chautauqua Co., NY calendar. Period gilt and gesso frame with open back. Fourth quarter 19th century. 10 1/2" x 13 1/2" sight, 14 1/2" x 17 1/2" overall. Old 4" tear from top edge repaired with tape on verso, additional tear to left and small repair to upper left corner. Estimate: $300 - $500.

Lot 1112 - CHARLES BURTON (ACT. 1800-1842) PROFILE PORTRAIT, pencil and charcoal on paper laid on board, of an unknown male subject, signed "C. Burton" lower right. First half 19th century. 9 3/4" x 7 1/2". Losses to sides not affecting the subject, two tears to right edge, one into subject, moderate discoloration and spotting. Estimate: $800 - $1,200.
Note: Charles Burton was a very active portrait painter, draftsman, landscape artist and teacher, working in New York City, Washington, DC, Baltimore, and Jefferson Co., VA from 1819-1842. This profile is closely related to an example sold through our galleries in 2005, which was of an identified Jefferson Co., VA (now WV) resident.

Lot 1113 - AMERICAN FOLK ART PAINTED TREENWARE BOWL - DR. WILLIAM M. KERR'S INDIANA HOMESTEAD, the interior-painted depiction featuring a main house with adjacent front doors surrounded by various dependencies, a horse and rider and horse and buggy at the front. Dr. Kerr (1862-1930) was a medical student at the University of Virginia in the 19th century. Fourth quarter 19th century. 3 3/4" h, 14" dia. Lot 1115 - UNIDENTIFIED MID-ATLANTIC 1825 FRAKTUR-DRAWING FOR MAGDALENA SELTZER, featuring a six-petal rosette and star-flower blooms above a central heart surrounding a German inscription, Seltzer's name and date across the bottom. Rodman" across lower front, original dry varnished and stained surface. Grant Rodman (b. 1869) is listed in the 1880 US census at Binghamton, NY, served as postmaster of Slate Run, PA in 1889, and ran for Mayor of Corning, NY in 1902. Lot 1129 - NEW JERSEY LAMINATED WOOD HALF-HULL SHIP BUILDER'S MODEL, original polychrome paint, lettered "EDWARD G. TAULINE" on the stern, mounted on a framed wooden board. Research indicates that this model was built by Captain Samuel Gaskill of Mays Landing. He was thought to be the most famous of all Mays Landing shipwrights. The Tauline, which was the last of the Mays Landing vessels, was launched in 1885. Fourth quarter 19th century. 11 1/2" x 44 1/2" overall. Very good condition with expected wear and separations.
