Lot 1001 - OUTSTANDING HAGERSTOWN, MD POLYCHROME-SLIP DECORATED LEAD-GLAZED EARTHENWARE BOWL, wide slightly dished rim and a pronounced foot, exceptionally well executed spiked and arched slip decoration on inner shoulder, slip-trailed undulating line around rim. Attributed to Adam Neff, Hagerstown, MD. Late 18th to first quarter 19th century. 2" h, 10 3/4" dia rim, 6 1/4" dia foot. Remarkably near proof condition with only some very minor wear to rim edges. Lot 1002 - IMPORTANT ROCKINGHAM CO., VA DECORATED SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE PITCHER, "1" capacity stamp, incised should ring and pronounced foot, brushed cobalt bird on branch decoration, additional cobalt flanking spout, across capacity stamp and surrounding handle terminals. Attributed to Joseph Silber, probably working at Emanuel Suter's New Erection Pottery, or possibly at Rawley Springs. Second half 19th century. 9 3/4" h, 6" dia rim. Undamaged except for a couple very minor chips to rim and base. Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
Reference: Closely parallels Evans/Suter, p. 49, fig. 54.
Provenance: Descended in a Harrisonburg, VA family.
Note: This pitcher is one of only three recorded Rockingham Co. pieces featuring a bird decoration which closely mimics a large body of wares produced by Cowden & Wilcox of Harrisburg, PA. These Valley anomalies can be explained by the fact that Emanuel Suter worked for a short time at the Harrisburg pottery near the end of the Civil War and would have been exposed to this particular decoration on a daily basis. It is possible that Suter actually decorated these Rockingham Co. pieces from memory, or more likely that Silber copied the decoration from an example which Suter had brought back upon his return home at the end of the war.

Lot 1003 - IMPORTANT COFFMAN SCHOOL, PROBABLY ROCKINGHAM CO., VA INSCRIBED AND DECORATED SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE DIMINUTIVE LIDDED JAR, bulbous form with heavy neck bead, two lightly ribbed handles, and original lid, incised "Strawbery" on one side and "Julia A. E. Eddins" on the other, brushed cobalt decoration full round and at the handle terminals. Attributed to the school of Andrew Coffman, probably Eastern Rockingham Co. Mid 19th century. 5 3/4" h overall, jar 4 1/2" h, 3" dia rim, 4 1/4" dia overall, 2 7/8" dia base. Outstanding condition having only the partial loss to one handle and minor flakes to lid. Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000.
Reference: Closely related to Evans/Suter, pp. 41, 42, figs. 30-33.
Provenance: Formerly from the estate of Craig Patterson, Grottoes, Va.
Note: This jar's inscriptions are by the same hand as the examples illustrated by Evans and Suter although its small size and decoration are atypical. While Eddins has not been positively identified, a Julia A. Eddins was recorded in the 1860 Madison Co. census. Evans/Suter notes that several examples of this more bulbous style jar have been found in Madison and Greene Counties which are east of Rockingham Co., just across the Blue Ridge Mountains from Coffman's Swift Run/Beldor site. This jar was originally discovered in the Patterson estate of Grottoes which is located on Rt. 340 directly south of Coffman's pottery. This corridor has been the source of numerous other Coffman attributed lidded jars.

Lot 1006 - VIRGINIA DECORATED SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE JAR WITH INCISED SPREAD-WING EAGLE, approximately two gallon ovoid form with two pulled handles incised on their edge and a boldly molded rim, the eagle on the front is brushed with cobalt and surrounded by additional brushed and slip-trailed cobalt decorations, the reverse features a brushed and slip-trailed cobalt tulip with leafy stem, additional cobalt surrounds the handles. References: 1. Closely parallels Comstock, p. 209, fig. 5.25.
2. Decoration closely parallels Evans/Suter, p. 4, pl. 4, and p. 42, fig. 35.
Provenance: Ex-collection Hoyt (Bud) DeShields Estate, Frederick Co., MD.
Note: The exact origin of this crock presents a great puzzle. It is undoubtedly by the same potter as the jar illustrated by Comstock referenced above, which he attributes to Samuel Bell. The pitcher illustrated by Evans/Suter referenced above, which they attribute to the Zigler pottery in Timberville, is clearly by the same decorator.
At this time it seems that Philip Byers is the most likely source of this jar and its mate illustrated in Comstock. The tulip's leafy branch is closely associated with Zigler's pottery, and considering that Byers operated a pottery in close proximity to Zigler's and quite possibly also worked for Zigler, strong evidence points to Byers as the maker. Further evidence is provided by a jar sold by Crocker Farm in May, 2005 that was signed "P. Byers" and demonstrates the same unusual yellowish green glazed areas against a bright gray ground. On the other hand, Byers also had working relationships with Peter Bell in Winchester and Samuel Bell in Strasburg, which leaves open the possibility that one of these potters is the source of this jar.
