The galleries at Green Valley Auctions, Inc. in Mt. Crawford, VA were sparkling once again for the firm's annual Fall Glass and Lighting Auction held on September 19-22, 2007. The sale was comprised of between 8,000 and 10,000 pieces of pressed flint and non-flint Early American Pattern Glass, along with kerosene period lighting and miniature oil lamps. Presented in five sessions over four days, the more than 3,500 lots were sold by Internet catalog, block lots, choice table lots, tray lots and box lots.
Glass featured in the auction included the Dr. Renato Berroya collection, Long Island, NY; the private collection and partial stock of Richard Adams, RFD Antiques, Blandon, PA; the private collection of Mike and Ronda Henry, formerly of Myersville, MD; the Bettye James collection, Lakeland, FL; the Olive Alder collection, Boonsboro, MD; property of the Wichita Art Museum being sold to benefit their glass acquisition fund; along with other consignments from across North America.
The auction drew 517 registered bidders, representing 47 states as well as Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Russia, South Africa and the United Kingdom. In addition to the more than 450 absentee and live Internet bids submitted through eBay Live, Jeff Evans and his efficient auction staff handled 40 live telephone bids and more than 1,100 absentee bids.
Due to the increasing demand for their catalogs to be posted on the Internet and the continued decreasing sales of their customary glossy printed catalogs, Green Valley Auctions did not publish an illustrated catalog for this auction; however, their usual detailed catalog was available on their website where it could be downloaded and printed free-of-charge. A listing of realized prices will also be posted on their website, approximately 30 days after the end of the auction.
This 13th annual glass and lighting auction marked Green Valley's foray into the world of Internet bidding. Recently partnered with Live Auctioneers, Green Valley Auctions was able to offer the September 22nd cataloged portion of the sale through eBay Live, thereby providing registered eBay users with the opportunity to bid in real time or by absentee bid, from the privacy of their own computers.
The auction ran smoothly with only an occasional hitch early in the sale, associated with the added aspect of the Internet bidding. The selling pace was slightly slowed due to the additional time involved with coordinating an entirely different group of bidders, but a number of people who were both present at the sale and watching live on the Internet, commented later that any reduction in pace was barely noticeable.
Jeffrey S. Evans, Green Valley Auctions president and senior auctioneer, noted that this initial eBay Live venture was a positive experience overall, stating after the sale, "I am very pleased with the eBay participation which allowed many buyers the chance to watch or bid on items at reasonable prices, thus helping raise the prices of items in the lower and middle markets." All future cataloged sales conducted at Green Valley Auctions will also be offered via eBay Live.
