EXTREMELY RARE J. EBERLY & CO. (ATTRIBUTED), STRASBURG, VA. POLYCHROME GLAZED EARTHENWARE PIG-SHAPED BOTTLE (Lot #1 - $11,550), approximately 1 pint, well colored lead, manganese and copper glazes over a slip wash, two grip indentions on either side. 3 1/4" h, 6 3/4" long, 3" diameter body. Some material and glaze loss to three feet, tail and eye-brows, additional normal glaze losses/wear and small spots of exfoliation.

Note: This example is presumably the smallest of the three or four sizes which were produced. The form is so rare that it was not represented in the 2000+ pieces collected and published by Rice and Stoudt in the late 1920s.

RARE S. BELL & SON (ATTRIBUTED), STRASBURG, VA. LEAD AND MANGANESE GLAZE OVER SLIP WASHED EARTHENWARE PITCHER (Lot #9 - $5,225), molded octagonal English Ironstone form, excellent color contrast and mottled decoration. 9" h overall. Outstanding condition for these thin-walled pitchers, small chip to edge of spout, minor spot of glaze loss to handle and inside of spout along with some light wear to rim.

EXCEPTIONAL VIRGINIA PAINTED WHITE OAK SPLINT ROUND HANDLED BASKET (Lot #99 - $3,740), original vibrant Prussian blue paint with outstanding wear, very finely woven with delicate kick-up in bottom. Late 19th/early 20th century. 6 1/2" h overall, 7 1/4" d rim. Outstanding condition with only some minor losses/breaks in bottom.
Provenance: Property of a Maryland estate collection.

RARE VIRGINIA SILHOUETTE OF A GENTLEMAN (Lot #135 - $3,080), inscribed "Solmon Truby?" below image and "Cut with the Mouth by M. A. Honeywell" across the lower edge, in what appears to be its original black painted frame. Martha A. Honeywell (c. 1787-1848?) was a severely handicapped itinerant artist who advertised her services at the Indian Queen Tavern, Fairfax Street, Alexandria, Va., in 1807. See MESDA Journal, Summer 1996, pp. 1-41, article by Mona L. Dearborn, for more information. Early 19th century. 5" x 4" overall. Excellent overall condition.

VIRGINIA LEATHER OVAL KEY BASKET (Lot #137 - $4,400), high sides with all-over diamond design, original stitched handle. Mid 19th century. 6 1/2" h overall, 4 1/4" h rim, 3 1/2" x 7 1/4". Excellent condition, handle slightly tilted and with minor rubbing.
Provenance: Found in Blacksburg, Va.

RARE VIRGINIA STOVE PLATE, PENNYBACKER'S REDWELL FURNACE (Lot #144 - $5,170), side plate for a six-plate stove, cast at Derick Pennybacker's Redwell furnace, Page (formerly Shenandoah) County. Upper inscription reads "HIR IST EIN JEGER AUF DER JAGT ALSO", "Here is a hunter on the hunt", above a lower panel containing a hunter and deer. A complete stove bearing this plate and a front plate inscribed "D. PENNEBACKER HIS REDWIL FURNACE SEPTE 21 1787" is in the collection of the Mercer Museum. Fourth quarter 18th century. 25" x 28". As found condition, warped in center, tight hairline off right side to near middle of plate.

IMPORTANT KATE HARRIS DESIGNED ART NOUVEAU SILVER COMPOTE, WILLIAM HUTTON & SONS, LONDON, 1902 (Lot #197 - $4,510), circular shallow lightly hammered bowl set with opals around shoulder, resting on four clusters of five lily-pad supports and a circular stepped foot, "RMG" monogram on bowl shoulder. Early 20th century. 9" h, 6 1/2" d rim, 5" d foot. Excellent condition, two opals with fracture.
Provenance: Deaccessioned by the Glass-Glen Burnie Museum, Winchester, Va.

"FRANCOIS VANDEVERDONCK, 1881" SIGNED OVINE PAINTING (Lot #285 - $5,225), oil on canvas, signed lower left and inscription on reverse, attributed to Francois Vandeverdonck (19th century, Belgian), depicting seven sheep, a goat and ducks, period gilt frame. Fourth quarter 19th century. 19" x 26 1/2", 27 1/2" x 35" overall. Excellent condition.

UNSIGNED AMERICAN SCHOOL PORTRAIT (Lot #286 - $7,425), oil on canvas, possibly by Charles Peale Polk, depicting a young boy in green dress holding an apple in his right hand, family tradition identifies the subject as Jacob Fry of Shenandoah Co., Va., contemporary frame. First quarter 19th century. 30" x 24". Relined and some small areas of restoration.

EXTREMELY RARE VIRGINIA PAINTED WINDSOR ROPE CRADLE (Lot #299 - $9,625), original worn black paint over red wash, mixed woods including yellow pine rockers, each end with six spindles, bowed crest rail and eared corner posts, each side with 14 spindles and birdcage at head, mortised bottom frame retaining 22 original rope knobs, rockers pegged into short posts which are in turn mortised through the bottom frame. First quarter 19th century. 21 1/2" h head, 18 1/2" h foot, 44" long, 27" wide rockers. Outstanding original condition with untouched dry surface.

IMPORTANT SHENANDOAH VALLEY CHIPPENDALE INLAY DECORATED WALNUT CHILD'S BLANKET CHEST (Lot #311 - $13,200), rectangular lid with applied moldings above a dovetailed case, applied base moldings and straight cut-out bracket feet. Interior with lidded till and fine strap hinges. Front with inlaid horizontal panel containing "Jacob Fry His Chest The 4 Apr 1818" along with diamonds and an unidentified symbol. Yellow pine and walnut secondary woods. First quarter 19th century. 13" h, 12" x 29". Excellent condition, till lid possibly replaced, several very minor old repairs.

SHENANDOAH VALLEY HEPPLEWHITE WALNUT DIMINUTIVE STAND-UP DESK (Lot #329 - $4,290), lifting lid revealing a plain interior, boldly cut-out front and end skirts, supported by four finely tapered square legs. Yellow pine secondary wood. First quarter 19th century. 38" h, 14" x 27". Excellent condition, old patch in top and front where lock removed.

SHENANDOAH VALLEY SHERATON WALNUT LINEN PRESS IN TWO SECTIONS (Lot #335 - $8,250), upper section with applied molded cornice above two blind doors, each having four fielded panels, lower section with two drawers above two stacked center drawers flanked by one single-panel door on each side, applied half-round base molding and resting on four turned feet. Nicely molded doors and scratch beaded drawers. Retains a desirable old finish. Yellow pine secondary wood, original wooden knobs. First quarter 19th century. 91 1/2" high overall, 38 1/2" h base, 13" deep top, 18 1/2" deep base, 56" wide overall. Lacking left end cornice, right upper door with losses at hinges, base lacking seat molding for upper case.

AMERICAN SILVER MOUNTED GREEN INTAGLIO CUT GLASS CLARET JUG (Lot #355 - $7,425), dark green shading to yellow green, swirled floral panels and notched prisms separated by uncut panels, embossed sterling lid and handle marked "Gorham Mfg. Co. Sterling 5". Early 20th century. 11" h overall, 4 3/4" greatest d. Excellent overall condition, having only several very minor nicks to prisms.

AUGUSTA COUNTY, VA WALNUT 16 TIN PIE SAFE (Lot #384 - $9,075), rectangular top with applied moldings above two doors and high turned legs, each door and end set with four tins hand punched in an urn and vine design, tins secured by very finely executed moldings. Single central shelf interior, lower compartment having a center dividing panel with ventilation holes. Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. Second quarter 19th century. 57 1/2" h, 26 1/2" x 58 1/2" case, 12 1/2" x 8 1/2" tins. As found condition with lightly cleaned front and dry surface, minor damage at one door hinge, one end tin with corner loss and lacking one molding strip.

EXCEPTIONAL SHENANDOAH VALLEY FEDERAL CARVED AND PAINTED YELLOW PINE MANTLE (Lot #402 - $4,510), stepped-edge top with applied moldings above a four-blade cornice and reeded and gouge carved frieze, three-panel central reserve with applied carved cartouches and fans flanked on either side by a pair of finely reeded bulbous columns, each floor return with a pair of reeded half columns to a wide base-board molding. Retains an untouched old black painted dry surface. Late 18th/early 19th century. 67" h overall, 74" wide overall, 63" wide body, 38 1/2" x 40 1/2" opening. Excellent original condition with minor losses to applied beads and moldings.

CONFEDERATE SOLDIER 1/2-PLATE AMBROTYPE IMAGE (Lot #1076 - $3,520), unidentified seated officer in a frock coat with shoulder straps, brass buttons on collar and cuffs, in paper half case with liner. Third quarter 19th century. 6" x 4 3/4" overall. Excellent condition, a clear image that appears to have been lightly cleaned.
