  • EQUESTRIAN (Lot #2 - $385), "The Book of The Horse" by S. Sidney. Cassell Petter and Galpin., London, Paris and NY. Leather spine and 25 color plates. Two 1/2" splits to spine, edges worn, slightly faded, binding coming loose. Interior very clean, plates nice.

  • POST CARDS (Lot #59 - $550), album of approximately 255 cards of ocean liners; many of the White Star fleet including Titanic, Hamburg-Amerika, Kaiser Wilhelm der Grosse, Holland-America, etc.; real photos include exterior and interior views, undivided and divided backs, etc. 20th c. Most very good to excellent, some with wear and corner tears.

  • POST CARDS (Lot #61 - $605), album of approximately 263 cards of small town New York including Phoenix, Plainsville, Lysander, Jordan, Mexico, Cazenovia, etc.; 45 real photo views of covered bridge, street scenes, mill, lighthouse, interiors, etc.; undivided and divided backs, etc. 20th c. Very good to excellent, some with minor wear.

  • PAINT DECORATED SIGNED AND DATED DOCUMENT BOX (Lot #115 - $550), rectangular with hinged lid, incised and polychrome painted pinwheels and circles on cream and green grounds, "JET" initials on front, inscribed on interior of lid "J.E. Tucker's Box" and "March the 15, 1852". Mid 19th c. 5 1/2" h, 8 3/4" x 20 1/2". Old patches at interior hinges, rodent holes in one end.

  • GRISWOLD NO. 0 CAST IRON TOY TEA KETTLE (Lot #128 - $440), bail handle with swivel lid, marked under base. First half 20th c. 3 1/2" h, 4 5/8" d base. Excellent condition.

  • STEIFF ANIMAL (Lot #208 - $770), exceptional studio tiger, seated. Attributed to Steiff. Mid 20th c. 26" h, 24" l. Excellent condition.

  • AMERICAN PEWTER MUG (Lot #339 - $66), marked for Josiah Danforth, Middletown, Conn., 1821-1843. 6" h. Very good condition, worn/scratched exterior surface coating.

  • AMERICAN PEWTER CHARGER (Lot #342 - $1,210), marked for Thomas Badger, Boston, 1787-1815. 14 7/8" d. Very good condition, some pitting and scratches.

  • BLUE & WHITE SALT GLAZE (Lot #347 - $495), Eagle pitcher. 8" h. Tiny roughness on spout.

  • UNIDENTIFIED PEWTER MEASURE (Lot #388 - $930), baluster type, unmarked. First half 19th c. 9" h. Very good condition, slight denting.

  • UNIDENTIFIED PEWTER PLATE (Lot #467 - $660), unidentified "PNT" and "T/1643" touchmarks, wide plain rim, engraved crest. 8 1/2" d. Good condition, overall pitting and scratches.

  • NORTH CAROLINA REGIMENTAL CIVIL WAR BELT BUCKLE (Lot #476 - $3,520), oval sand-cast brass, embossed "6th INF/NC. ST.", retains one soldered belt hook. Variant without period after S. 2" x 2 7/8". Excellent as found uncleaned condition.

  • NORTH CAROLINA REGIMENTAL CIVIL WAR BELT BUCKLE (Lot #477 - $3,850), oval sand-cast brass, embossed "6th INF/NC. S.T.", missing belt hooks. 2" x 2 7/8". Excellent as found uncleaned condition.

  • COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER (Lot #489 - $1,650), 44 caliber, 6-shot cylinder, 8" round barrel marked "Address Col. Saml Colt, New-York, U.S. America", matching serial #114573, inspector stampings, hand engraved owner's initials. 13 1/2" long overall. Very good as found antique condition, some very light surface rust.

  • EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT J. EBERLY & CO. (ATTRIBUTED), STRASBURG, VA, POLYCHROME GLAZED LAMB DOORSTOP (Lot #1001 - $34,100), strongly molded form with lead, manganese and copper glazes over a slip wash. 3 1/2" h, 12" long. Excellent overall condition with normal high spot glaze wear and some small areas of exfoliation.

    Note: One of only five recorded examples, of which four are currently in private hands. The Deyerle/Esmerian specimen now resides in the collection of the American Folk Art Museum. Truly one of the great icons of American folk pottery.

  • IMPORTANT RUDOLPH CHRIST (ATTRIBUTED), MORAVIAN DECORATED EARTHENWARE STORAGE JAR (Lot #1003 - $24,200), ovoid form with applied open handles, exuberant green, cream and dark brown/black slip decoration over red body, middle period, Salem. 9" h, 6" d rim. Outstanding condition, normal rim flaking/roughness, some glaze wear/scratches.

  • RARE MORAVIAN DECORATED EARTHENWARE BOTTLE (Lot #1004 - $9,900), squat semi-ovoid form with elongated neck, two shallow rings above shoulder, green and cream slip vertical fern and dot decoration over dark brown slip base, middle period, probably Salem. 6 1/2" h, 2 1/2" d base. Outstanding condition, minor rim flaking/roughness, some minor spots of glaze exfoliation, chip at base.

  • JOHN BELL (WAYNESBORO, PA), LEAD AND MANGANESE-GLAZED EARTHENWARE BUTTER TUB (Lot #1006 - $6,050), applied twisted rope handles, rests on three small applied tab feet, nicely mottled. 3" h overall, 5 3/8" d. Exceptional undamaged condition with one tiny glaze pop.

  • SOLOMON BELL, STRASBURG, VA., DECORATED SLIP WASHED EARTHENWARE VASE (Lot #1007 - $7,150), free-hand copper and manganese drop floral decoration. 10 1/4" h. Exceptional condition having only a minor rim flake.

  • IMPORTANT AMERICAN NAIVE OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT (Lot #1138 - $14,300), depicting a young boy in red dress seated in a red chair beside a window with rose on sill. Second quarter 19th c. 27" x 19 1/2" current sight, 29" x 23" original sight. As found attic fresh condition, 3" tear in upper left corner, old patch to 1" tear in forehead, 1/4" d hole in lower left corner, several small surface scratches. Lacking stretchers, 1 1/2" to 2" of canvas edge folded over on three sides and tacked into current frame.
    Provenance: Recently discovered in a Staunton, Virginia attic.

  • IMPORTANT VIRGINIA AFRICAN AMERICAN FRATERNAL CARVED AND PAINTED FOLK ART CANE (Lot #1141 - $11,000), carved elements include crossed military rifles, clasped hands, tobacco leaf, American shield, star, heart, cross, alligator, turtle, "UOTR" and "1213", all with original paint decoration. Fourth quarter 19th c. 35 1/2" long. Excellent original condition.
    Note: The Order of True Reformers was an African American fraternal organization founded by William Washington Browne, a Methodist Minister of Richmond, in 1881. Browne, who was born October 20, 1849 to Virginia slave parents, lived a momentous and accomplished life. W.E.B. Du Bois characterized the UOTR as "Probably the most remarkable Negro organization in the country." A short biography of Browne accompanies this lot.

  • RARE VIRGINIA STOVE PLATE, "BLACKFORD & ARTHUR CO." (Lot #1143 - $3,080), side plate for a six plate stove, cast at Benjamin Blackford's and John Arthur's Isabella (formerly Redwell) furnace, Page (formerly Shenandoah) County. Inscription above a neo-classical urn, all within a C-scroll frame. First quarter 19th c. 19" h, 26" w. Excellent condition.

  • JAMES ROBINSON "TRIFID" STERLING FLATWARE SERVICE (Lot #1156 - $2,970), 48 pieces, consisting of 8 hollow-handle knives (9"), 8 salad forks (6 3/4"), 8 place forks (7 1/4"), 8 soup spoons (7 3/8"), 6 dessert spoons (6 3/4"), 8 teaspoons (5 3/4"), 2 hollow-handle butter knives. Third quarter 20th c. Like new condition.

  • GEORGE II SILVER CRUET SET, SAM WOOD, LONDON, 175 (Lot #1157 - $2,420), shaped stand resting on four shell feet, applied rococo cartouche with engraved armorial crest, holding three vase-shaped casters, each with crests matching stand, and two honey-comb cut bottles with silver caps. Mid 18th c. 8 3/4" h overall. Excellent condition.

  • PAIR GEORGE III MAHOGANY KNIFE BOXES (Lot #1275 - $5,500), each with blocked serpentine front and slanting hinged lid, resting on four squared bracket feet, London silver mounts with 1793 hallmark, original slotted interior with sting inlay, lid interior with star and sting inlay. Late 18th c. 15" h, 9 1/2" x 12". Excellent overall condition and patina, minor old repairs and cracking.

  • C.F. MONROE CO. NAKARA VASE (Lot #1278 - $11,550), original "gold plated" rim and base mounts, harbor with sailboats decoration on both sides, signed. Early 20th c. 17 1/2" h overall, 12" h body, 5 1/2" d rim. Original undamaged condition.

  • IMPORTANT SOUTH CAROLINA HEPPLEWHITE INLAID WALNUT HUNTBOARD (Lot #1280 - $33,000), rectangular molded edge top with applied lower molding, over a center bottle drawer retaining its original dividers, flanked on either side by a stack of two drawers, all with unusual molded edges and scallop-end sting inlays, supported by four tapering square molded legs with applied cut-out scroll corner brackets. Yellow pine secondary wood, replaced oval brasses in original holes. Late 18th/early 19th c. 43" h, 53" w, 24 1/2" d. Excellent overall condition, old refinish, filled old split in top, minor edge repair to two drawers and two legs, one corner bracket replaced, minor evidence of old insect damage.

    Note: Recorded and attributed by Frank Horton and Brad Rauschenberg for MESDA in 1976, photo S-5799. A single drawer side table from the same shop was also recorded by MESDA in 1978, photo S-8536. It features an identical drawer molding and inlay, molded legs and method of attaching top.

  • NEW ENGLAND QUEEN ANNE WALNUT HIGHBOY (Lot #1289 - $8,250), in two sections, upper with fan-carved bonnet pediment, turned finials and three over four drawers, lower with one over three drawers, fan-carved and shaped skirt, supported on four cabriole legs. Pine secondary wood, slightly differing brasses appear to be original. Third quarter 18th c. 85" h overall, 40 1/2" w, 19 1/2" d. Excellent visual condition, some old repairs and alterations including upper back boards.

  • VIRGINIA HEPPLEWHITE WALNUT TILT-TOP CANDLESTAND (Lot #1319 - $3,300), circular top supported by a well turned pedestal and tri-pod base. Retains an old, possibly original dry surface. Early 19th c. 28" h, 18" dia top. Top separated at glue joint, otherwise excellent condition.
    Provenance: Collection of the late Dorothy Lambert Mondell and Josephine Garland Lambert, Waynesboro, Va.

  • MARYLAND/VIRGINIA FANCY PAINTED BENCH/WINDOW SEAT (Lot #1325 - $3,080), painted black with original gilt decoration, scrolled ends and four turned legs, retains its original chrome yellow painted caned seat. Second quarter 19th c. 30" h overall, 19" h seat, 60" long, 17" d. Excellent original condition, minor wear to paint, partial loss of one foot pad.

  • RARE GRANQUIST FAMILY DORFLINGER COLORED AND ENGRAVED GLASS COMPOTE (Lot #1381 - $825), vaseline bowl with square framed floral decoration, hollow Venetian blue stem and vaseline foot, applied deep green rims, partially polished pontil. Family history indicates that this compote was made by one of the Larson family and engraved by John Granquist. First quarter 20th c. 11 1/2" h, 10 1/2" d rim, 7" d foot. Undamaged.

  • DORFLINGER COLORED CUT GLASS PAIR OF WINE DECANTERS (Lot #1507 - $2,640), red to clear, each of tapered form cut in the "Arcola" pattern, star cut base and facetted stopper. First quarter 20th c. 15 1/4" h overall. Undamaged.

  • POTTHAST BROTHERS REPRODUCTION CHIPPENDALE INLAID MAHOGANY SET OF EIGHT DINING CHAIRS (Lot #1529 - $4,125), consisting of two arm and six side, each with shaped crest rail, pierced splat, inlaid seat rails, tapering square legs and floral needlepoint type seats. Marked with stamp and paper label. Mid 20th c. 38" h overall. Excellent condition.
    Provenance: The Dr. C.T. Riddel, Jr. estate.

  • KITTINGER REPRODUCTION QUEEN ANNE MAHOGANY WINGBACK CHAIR (Lot #1555- $1,870), made for Colonial Williamsburg, pattern no. CW-163, rust color upholstery, serpentine front and cabriole legs. Marked with stamp, plaque and paper label. Second half 20th c. 49" h overall, 33" w. Excellent condition, minor fabric soiling.

  • HAWKES BRILLIANT CUT GLASS SET OF NINE ICE CREAM PLATES (Lot #1968- $1,155), hobstars and fans, hobstar cut base, signed. Late 19th/early 20th c. 7" d. Seven undamaged, two with loss of scallop.
