Highlights of the 2003 Annual Spring Sale of 18th & 19th Century Glass & Ceramics

Below are just a few of the highlights of the large sale of 18th & 19th century glass and ceramics.

  • LEE/ROSE NO. 68 (Lot #25 - $5,225), colorless with just a hint of cloudiness in direct light, 18 even scallops. Extremely rare. Unknown origin, possibly Midwestern. 3 11/16" d. Exceptional with a strong impression, having only two tiny flakes on rim edge and one small very shallow rim spall, some surface annealing lines, profile is absolutely proof.

    Note: Rose noted only 4 known specimens, most in cloudy sick glass. Even with the surfacing of several subsequent examples, this remains one of the most sought after and elusive cup plates.
    An example from the Marble collection was included in the 1954 Corning exhibit (case 38 #640) and included by Rose in his new "100 Best" clear list.

  • LEE/ROSE NO. 227 (Lot #116 - $7,150), brilliant deep green, 72 even scallops. Extremely rare. Philadelphia area, probably Union Glass Works. 3 3/8" d. Outstanding, loss of two scallops and two others very lightly tipped.
    Reference: Bilane, p. 14, "...one of the rarest plates known."

    Note: We could find no additional sales records for this very important and beautiful plate. It was on Elsholz's want list but he never acquired a specimen. An example from the Marble collection was included in the 1954 Corning exhibit (case 36 #567) and included by Rose in his new "100 Best" colored list where he noted "perhaps seven or eight known colored specimens distributed through the four serration variants."

  • LEE/ROSE NO. 459-m (Lot #180 - $5,225), jade opaque, slightly marbled, 43 even scallops. Extremely rare. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 3 13/16" d. Excellent, four scallops tipped and two others lightly tipped, otherwise only some flaking/mold roughness.

    Note: A very important plate in great condition. An example from the Marble collection was included in the 1954 Corning exhibit (case 37 #584) and included by Rose in his new "100 Best" colored list.

  • CD-2A (Lot #293 - $1,320), covered, colorless, extremely rare. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 3" h overall, 1 15/16" x 3 1/8". Excellent, cover with chip on edge of rim along with several small chips and minor flaking under rim, minor flaking/mold roughness on interior base rim and feet.

  • LACY (Lot #322 - $1,760), oval bowl, canary, lily, scroll and diamond pattern with beaded rim and unpatterned base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 7/8" h, 1 1/4" x 1 7/8". Normal light flaking/mold roughness on interior of rim and under base.

  • HAIRPIN (Lot #335 - $7,150), square dish, colorless, center with diamonds in square background, scallop and point rim. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 1 1/4" h, 7 3/8" x 7 3/4". Exceptional condition, small chip on edge of one corner, light underfill on another corner, chip on table ring, otherwise only a hint of mold roughness under rim.

    Note: An extremely important piece of lacy glass with impeccable provenance and in top condition.
    James Rose included an example of this dish from the collection of John Rollin Stuart, III in his 1954 Corning exhibit, case 11, no. 134, where he noted that it was hitherto unpublished and "Extremely rare."
    Elsholz noted "only 4 recorded examples." I have also only been able to record but four examples outlined as follows. This dish is one of a pair sold by Maude Feld to John Stuart, the other which was donated to the Sandwich Glass Museum, the example at Corning formerly in the Esterly and MacGowan collections, and the Elsholz example which was purchased from Richard Wood.
    Accompanying this lot are copies of two letters from Maude Feld pertaining to this dish and detailing it's provenance along with a copy of the sales slip.

  • FREE-BLOWN (Lot #447 - $1,100), trumpet form vase, translucent rose with light swirling and showing a slight opalescence, bulbous lower section tapering to a boldly flared and folded rim, applied solid stem and circular foot with pontil. 11" h, 4 7/8" d rim, 4 1/8" d foot. Undamaged.

  • FREE-BLOWN (Lot #449 - $935), open compote, folded rim bowl comprised of a colorless casing over light blue with rose interior lining, colorless applied baluster stem and circular foot with polished pontil. Possibly Pittsburgh. 5 3/4" h, 5 7/8" d rim, 4" d foot. Undamaged.

  • FREE-BLOWN (Lot #465 - $1,045), witch ball, deep ruby, rough open pontil. Possibly Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 7 3/4" d. Undamaged.
    Reference: Parallels B & K III, fig. 3233. Note: These large balls were supposedly hung in barns to protect animals.

  • FREE-BLOWN MARBRIE (Lot #468 - $990), drug bottle, cobalt blue with opaque white loopings, eight sided, original pewter collar with threads, pontil. 7 3/4" h overall, 1 7/8" x 3" base. Undamaged, some tiny open bubbles on loops.
    Provenance: A Philadelphia Collection.

  • PAPERWEIGHT (Lot #506 - $1,760), sulphide, flattened circular form containing four white titled presidential busts consisting of Monroe, John Adams, Jefferson and Van Buren, on a black ground, polished slightly concave base. Possibly New England Glass Co. 1 1/2" h, 4 1/4" d. Crown with some scratching and tiny bruise, 1/4" spall on shoulder, four interior bubbles partially obscuring bust of Adams.

  • PRESSED FLUTE (Lot #520 - $2,640), pair of wine coolers, colorless lead glass, on elongated Loop bases, wafer construction. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 10 3/4" h, 8 1/4" d rim, 5" d foot. One totally undamaged, the other with two shallow chips on foot.
    Reference: Parallels B & K I, fig. 1133, "The extremely rare wine cooler was one of the most beautiful forms made by the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company." Note: While this pair has most likely always been together, the clarity of the glass does vary slightly. I mention this for the record only as it in no way detracts from their beauty.

  • PRESSED LOOP/LEAF (Lot #521 - $8,525), vase, brillant deep violet blue, seven loops which boldly flair into rim petals, wafer to a knop stem and hexagonal base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 9 5/8" h, 5 1/2" d rim, 5 1/4" d base. Near proof, having only a pin-head size nick on one loop and a tiny flake on two base points.

    Note: An extremely rare and beautiful vase in the best possible condition.

  • PRESSED FOUR-PRINTIE BLOCK (Lot #522 - $2,310), vase, brilliant deep emerald green, gaffered rim, wafer to a hexagonal base. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 11 3/4" h, 4 1/2" d rim. Base edge with shallow 3/8" chip, small corner chip and several minor flakes, otherwise only some light interior residue.

  • SANDWICH STAR (Lot #524 - $1,870), spill/spoon holder, deep electric blue, polished pontil. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 5" h, 3 3/4" d. Normal wear to corners and interior, tiny flake/mold roughness to two foot corners.

  • ONION (EATON) (Lot #574 - $2,530), kerosene stand, mottled opaque robins egg blue, blown molded font over a pressed base, #2 brass fine-line collar and brass screw type connector. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 13 1/4" h. Exceptional with a minute flake at the inside mold line on the underside of the base and a small dent just above the bladed area of the connector.

    Displayed at the 1995 Sensational Sandwich Exhibition. Note: A very scarce form and possibly the only known example in this mottled color.

  • CUT OVERLAY (Lot #575 - $1,870), whale oil/fluid stand, ruby cut to colorless font, wafer attached to hexagonal colorless base, brass #1 fine line collar. New England Glass Co. or Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 10 1/2" h. Font shows a few minor abrasions and tiny flakes. There is a short horizontal closed bubble in the colorless layer at the font shoulder. Two low points of the hexagonal foot show minor chips.

    Note: An important lamp and one of the earliest examples of American overlay glass. The glass overlay technique is not one generally associated with pre-kerosene lighting devices other than peg lamps.

  • CUT OVERLAY (Lot #577 - $1,870), kerosene stand, opaque white cut to deep green font with applied colorless peg, brass connector attached to bronze finish spelter full figure stem on soapstone base, brass #2 fine line collar. 18 3/4" h. Minor scratching to white layer of font, wear to bronze finish, some roughness to soapstone.

    Note: This is an outstanding full figural example. The fonts deep green under color, as well as this lamps overall condition, should be noted.

  • BLOWN FONTS (Lot #583 - $660), pair of whale oil/fluid stand, frosted bulbous fonts, bladed wafers, pressed lacy Acanthus Leaf octagonal bases, contemporary #1 Taplin-Brown type collars, period double tube fluid burners with caps and chains. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. 8 1/2" and 9" h. Exceptional condition, the base of one is near perfect, the other has a small chip and other minor flakes.

    Provenance: Collection of Sidney Shochet. Note: These lamps are significant early glass lighting devices individually, finding a pair in this condition provides a rare opportunity.

  • BLOWN AND CUT FONT (Lot #585 - $2,090), whale oil/fluid stand, unusually large and heavy blown and cut font with hollow cut knop, pressed base, exceptionally large wafer connections, brass #1 fine line collar. Union Glass Works, Philadelphia, PA. 12 3/4" h. Base with usual damage and some losses. Where the top of the shoulder meets the base of the collar is found a narrow ring of glass roughness that extends the circumference. Overall, an above average example.

    Note: This lamps exceptionally large size makes it atypical of other known examples.

  • BLOWN FONT, LIONS HEAD AND BASKET OF FLOWERS BASE (Lot #602 - $715), whale oil stand, opaque white, ball font, multiple wafers attached to opaque white and fiery opalescent pressed base, early brass whale oil collar with integral 1 5/8" chimney-shade holder and its original whale oil burner. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. or New England Glass Co. 7 3/4" h. Small chips to upper and lower base corners and edges, open bubble on two low corners, burner is missing its set screw but the opposing pin is present. This example is in exceptional condition when compared with the level of damage generally associated with the Lions Head and Basket of Flowers base.

  • ANIMALS (Lot #1011 - $2,750), dogs, group figure, well colored polychrome decoration, poodle standing on top of stationary clock with a spaniel seated on either side, oval gilt lined base. 9 1/2" h, 2 1/2" x 7" at base. Crack on front lower edge of base.

    Note: This figure was exhibited at the Columbus Gallery of Fine Art, Columbus, Ohio, 1976.

  • CHILDREN WITH ANIMALS (Lot #1045 - $1,760), seated pair of figures, white with minimal decoration, right facing boy and left facing girl, each sitting on the back of a seated goat, oval gilt lined bases. 12" to 12 1/2" h, 3 1/4" x 7" at base. Boy undamaged, girl with chip on reverse at base.
    Reference: Parallels Harding II, figs. 2344, 2345.

  • THEATRICAL / LITERARY, "UNCLE TOM," (Lot #1346 - $1,210) group figure, moderate polychrome decoration, Eva standing on cotton bales with Uncle Tom holding an oar in his left hand, both standing in boat with water depicted beneath, oval titled gilt lined base. 12" h, 2 3/4" x 6 1/2" at base. Undamaged, small glaze flake on edge of boat.

  • CHILD'S TRANSFERWARE (Lot #1451 - $825), mug, black transfer with polychrome decoration, bird standing on leafy branch, "For a Good Girl." below. Second quarter 19th century. 2 1/8" h, 2 1/2" d. Undamaged.

  • CHILD'S TRANSFERWARE (Lot #1453 - $522), mug, brown transfer, hexagonal banner with "For Loving a Book," pink lustre bands. Second quarter 19th century. 1 7/8" h, 2 1/8" d. Undamaged.

  • MOCHAWARE (Lot #1487 - $715), earthworm pattern, bulbous mustard pot, no lid, central blue band with brown, tan, gray and white design, above is green band of three rows of embossed dots, applied handle with molded leaf design at top and bottom. First half 19th century. 3" h, 2 1/8" d at rim. Undamaged.

  • MOCHAWARE (Lot #1488 - $880), earthworm and cat's eye pattern, footed bowl, central tan band with white, brown and blue design, above is narrow blue band decorated with coggled Diamond design. First half 19th century. 4 1/2" h, 9 1/2" d at rim. Two hairlines off rim, very minor interior wear.

  • PARIAN (Lot #1489 - $880), mercury, classical style figure, man seated on rock formation, loin draped with cloth, wearing winged hat, caduceus lies on the ground below his feet. Second half 19th century. 18" h, 6 1/2" x 12" at base. One wing restored.

  • PARIAN (Lot #1496 - $880), classical style figure, nude woman rising from cattails and rushes, with an inverted urn, reverse incised "R & L" in oval, round plinth. Second half 19th century. 14 1/4" h, 4 1/2" d at base. Undamaged.

  • SPATTERWARE (Lot #1531 - $1,430), dove pattern, handleless cup and saucer, blue and mustard dove outlined in black, forked branch with green leaves, design repeated on saucer, rim of both pieces with red spatter, impressed "I" on base of cup, impressed geometric mark on base of saucer. Second quarter 19th century. Cup 2 1/4" h, 3 7/8" d at rim, saucer 5 5/8" d. Undamaged.

  • SPATTERWARE (Lot #1533 - $1,650), handless cup and saucer, yellow Dangling Tulip with Bleeding Heart type leaves and red buds, blue spatter on interior and exterior rim of cup and on rim of saucer, impressed "3" on reverse of saucer. Second quarter 19th century. Cup 2 1/2" h, 3 3/4" d at rim, saucer 5 3/4" d. Cup undamaged, saucer rim with repaired chip and hairline.

  • SPATTERWARE (Lot #1535 - $825), castle pattern, handless cup and saucer, entire design executed in red. Second quarter 19th century. Cup 2 7/8" h, 4" d at rim, saucer 5 7/8" d. Undamaged.
