  • SIMON'S CENTENNIAL BITTERS (Lot #66 - $825), "Trade Mark" on reverse, smooth base, applied collared lip, aqua. 10" h. Tiny flake on reverse above base.

  • ORIGINAL POCAHONTAS BITTERS, Y. FERGUSON (Lot #67 - $4,070), nicely whittled, smoth base, applied square lip, aqua. 9" h. Very shallow 1/8" wide flake off top of lip, some very light residue.

  • SPRING WATER BOTTLE (Lot #68 - $550), "Pavilion & United States Spring Co / Saratoga / N.Y. - Pavilion Water / Aperient", quart, applied tapered collared mouth, smooth base, nicely whittled, deep emerald green. 9 1/8" h. Undamaged with just a hint of wear, interior unwashed.

  • LAW VOLUMES, SET OF 13 & INDEX (Lot #93 - $2,090), "Hening's Statutes at Large." "The Statutes at Large Being A Collection of all the Laws of Virginia From the First Session of the Legislature, in the Year 1619." By William Waller Hening. 13 volumes 10 printed in Richmond, 1809, 1819, 20, 21, 22, and 23, 2 in Philadelphia, 1823 and 1 in New York, 1823. Lot also includes index to Hening's Statutes by Joesph Casey, reprinted by The Green Bookman, Bridgewater Va. 1933, edition of 300 copies. Books have normal wear and scuffing, vol. 7 has dark stain on spine, vol. 9 has silverfish damage to pages that doesn't affect text, vol. 11 has had water stain to lower corner. All volumes are solid and tight with normal foxing.

  • VIRGINIA VOLUME (Lot #98 - $352), "The Virginia Springs With Their Analysis...For the Use of the White Sulphur Water..." John J. Moorman, M.D. Published by Lindsay & Blankiston, Philadelphia, 1847. 219 pages w/fold out map inside cover. Very good condition w/slight wear to 2 spots on front cover, corners light bumping. Interior & binding good, pages & maps clean. Last page is stuck down covering errata pages.

  • VIRGINA VOLUME (Lot #105 - $473), "Historic Homes of Northern Virginia." John W. Wayland. The McClure Publishing Co. Staunton Va., 1937. 625 pages w/540 pictures and illustrations. Very good condition, shelf wear to top and bottom of spine. Interior and binding good and solid, writing in pen on front end paper.

  • KODAK ENSEMBLE (Lot #243 - $880), petite green camera with lipstick, compact and mirror in suede case with original box. Marked "Made in U.S.A. By Eastman Kodak Co. Rochester, N.Y." and " KODAK PETITE". First third 20th c. Case 4 3/4" x 5 5/8". Case has wear, minor imperfections.

  • DAZEY GLASS CHURN (Lot #307 - $1,045), 1 quart, embossed "Dazey Churn & Mfg. Co. St. Louis, U.S.A.", complete. First half 20th c. 11 1/4" h overall. Two small flakes on interior rim.

  • SALESMAN'S SAMPLE/TOY COOKSTOVE (Lot #343 - $1,210), brass plated cast iron and other metals, six burner, warming oven marked "Patented February 25, 1890," lower oven door marked "Champion Steel Range Co., Cleveland, Ohio, June 21, 1892," four utensils included. Late 19th c. 20" h overall, 9 1/8" x 13". Excellent condition. Some possible minor replacements.

  • CONFEDERATE CIVIL WAR AMBROTYPE (Lot #453 - $1,595), seated gentleman in uniform, two stripes on sleeve, identified as Captain John Kaylor Booton (1829-1902), Page Co., Virginia, cased. Together with two additional ambrotypes, one of he and his wife and another of his wife and child. 3 5/8" x 3 1/8" case. Minor imperfections.

  • COLT MODEL 1849 POCKET REVOLVER (Lot #454 - $1,870), marked "Address Saml Colt, New York City", full octagon barrel, matching serial #41641, engraved with owner's name and Wheeling, Va. 11" long overall, 6" barrel. Very good antique condition.

  • WHITNEY NAVY MODEL PERCUSSION REVOLVER (Lot #455 - $1,595), second model, second type, .36 caliber, marked "E. Whitney/N. Haven", full octagonal barrel, serial #4368. 13" long overall, 7 1/2" barrel. Very good antique condition.

  • COLT MODEL 1860 ARMY REVOLVER (Lot #456 - $2,310), marked "Address Saml Colt, New-York U.S. America", round barrel, matching serial #93277. 14" long overall, 8" barrel. Very good antique condition.

  • WINCHESTER MODEL 1886 LEVER ACTION RIFLE (Lot #483 - $1,980), caliber .38-.56 WCF, full octagon barrel, Buckhorn style sight, serial #43889. 45" long overall. Excellent condition.

  • MAYNARD FIRST MODEL CARBINE (Lot #484 - $3,520), single shot breech load percussion, fitted with Maynard type primer mechanism, iron patch box marked "Maynard Patentee/May 27, 1851/June 17, 1856", sling swivel, long folding tang sight. 37" long overall, 20" barrel. Good condition, loss of lever end curl, heavy corrosion to butt plate.

  • WINCHESTER MODEL 1873 LEVER ACTION RIFLE (Lot #485 - $1,155), third model, caliber .32 WCF, full octagon barrel, serial #419512B. 41" long overall, 24" barrel. Excellent refinished condition.

  • HAMPSHIRE COUNTY, (WEST) VIRGINIA KENTUCKY-TYPE LONG RIFLE (Lot #488 - $1,870), probably by Benjamin F. Shane, Gunsmith, 1824-1836. Full stock with brass acorn topped patchbox on front, brass elongated oval patchbox and German silver oval on reverse, converted to percussion. Second quarter 19th c. 54" long overall, 40" barrel. Some old repairs, otherwise excellent.

  • 1811 $5 GOLD PIECE (Lot #503A - $2,860). XF.

  • 1863 UNITED STATES LARGE SIZE $20 NOTE (Lot #520 - $1,017.50), Act of March 3rd 1863, two red 3037 serial numbers. Fine, no tears.

  • IMPORTANT STRASBURG, VA, PRESENTATION OVOID STONEWARE JAR (Lot #1001 - $34,100), inscribed full-round in cobalt script "Strasburg Virginia Shenandoah County May 20th 1833. W Miller", bold rolled rim and two delicate pulled handles with cobalt. 11 3/4" h, 6" d rim, 8 1/2" greatest d. Exceptional condition having only three very minor chips.

    1. Closely related to Comstock, p. 293, fig. 5.258, from the Smithsonian Institute collection, which is dated May 21, 1833.
    2. Closely related to Rice #1497, illus. p. 214, which is inscribed "WM".

    Note: This previously unknown jar represents only the second recorded specimen signed by William Miller, with the other example bearing only his initials (see reference #2). It is not known if the signature is that of William Miller, Sr. or Jr. The senior Miller is listed by Comstock as a carpenter and builder of the pot shop. The junior Miller is recorded as a possible decorator at the family shop. Interestingly, all of the other known dated examples of Miller pottery bear the same 1833 year date. Comstock states that this was possibly the pottery's first year of production.

  • EXTREMELY RARE HINKLE -& GRIM, STONYMAN, VA, DECORATED STONEWARE BATTER PITCHER (Lot #1003 - $9,900), attached saucer, simple free-hand cobalt decoration, incised bands below rim and on shoulder. 9" h, 4 1/4" d rim, 7" d saucer. Handle professionally restored, several short very light hairlines off rim, several small chips off inside of saucer rim.

    Reference: Mark as Comstock, p. 311, fig. 5.310.

    Note: This is the only known signed Middle Valley batter pitcher.

  • SOLOMON BELL, STRASBURG, VA, LEAD AND MANGANESE-GLAZED EARTHENWARE CAKE MOLD (Lot #1007 - $4,180), swirled so-called Turk's Head form. 3 3/4" h, 8 1/4" d. Excellent condition, two shallow rim chips and minor roughness to inside hole.

    Reference: Comstock, p. 235, fig. 5.97, this being the actual example.

  • CEPTIONAL PAGE CO., VA, PAINT DECORATED WHITE OAK SPLINT MINIATURE BASKET (Lot #1117 - $6,875), round with two delicate side handles, original blue paint with mustard yellow vertical stripes, very finely woven. Late 19th/early 20th c. 2" h, 4 5/8" d. Outstanding original untouched condition with expected paint wear.

    Provenance: Wayne E. Long Estate, Stanley, Va.

    Note: This is the second example of this distinctive paint decorated form that we have sold. The previous specimen was also found in Stanley, Va., unfortunately it was missing one handle.

  • EXTREMELY RARE VIRGINIA CUT-WORK COUNTERPANE (Lot #1129 - $3,960), comprised of three homespun panels, two wide side panels with floral and geometric decoration, center narrow panel with heart and floral decoration. Late 18th/early 19th c. 67" x 91". Excellent condition showing only some minimal discoloration and minor repairs/losses.

    Provenance: Property of a Staunton, Va. family.

  • IMPORTANT VIRGINIA STOVE PLATE, "THE MILLENIUM" (Lot #1174 - $12,100), cast at Col. Isaac Zane's Marlboro Furnace, Frederick Co. German inscriptions above and below central animal groups, inscriptions translate as "I hope for a better time, when all strife will cease" and "Cows and bears will go with each other on the pasture. The wolves will dwell with the lambs. Isaiah 11, 6-7.". Circa 1773. 20 1/2" x 22 1/2". Excellent condition with a strong impression.

    Provenance: Recently discovered in an upstate New York barn. A complete jamb stove dated 1773 is in the collection of the Museum of Early Southern Decroative Arts.

  • ESTONIAN SILVER PARCEL-GILT TANKARD (Lot #1176 - $4,950), on three ball and claw feet, ornate double scroll handle and seed-pod thumbpiece, flat hinged cover inset with a chased crest plaque having a stag's head and rampant lion, inscribed "H.F.M, A.S., V.M." and "1728", front with armorial engraving inscribed "Carl Gustav von Hagemeister" and "d. 8 Decemb. Anno 1771", Reval hallmark and "CMF" cipher, probably for Christopher Mansfeld. First half 18th c. 8" h overall, 6" d cover. Excellent condition, small dent on edge of cover.

    Note: Mrs. Ghia Borg was the granddaughter of Thyra (Tyra) Helena Borg who authored the classic volume "Gold and Silversmiths in Finland" in 1935. The elder Borg's impressive collection of Finnish silver, which is still held by her family, was recently published in the volume "Tyra Borg Silver Collection" by Raimo Fagerstrom.

  • "ELIN DANIELSON-GAMBOGI" SIGNED LANDSCAPE, OIL ON CANVAS (Lot #1261 - $6,050), attributed to Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861-1919), Finnish, signed lower right, a masonry wall with red double gate, trees and rolling hills in background, original gilt frame. Early 20th c. 15 1/2" x 23 1/2" image, 27" x 34 1/2" overall. Excellent condition, some losses to frame.

  • "ELIN DANIELSON-GAMBOGI" SIGNED INTERIOR, OIL ON CANVAS (Lot #1262 - $7,150), attributed to Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861-1919), Finnish, signed lower right, two white painted chairs with yellow tapestry seats, at a square white painted center table with table cloth and potted flower, all before a window overlooking a garden, gilt frame. Early 20th c. 16 1/2" x 20 1/2" image, 21" x 25" overall. Some areas of wear/rubbing to surface.

  • CONTINENTAL PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG NOBLE LADY, OIL ON CANVAS (Lot #1263 - $3,300), a quiver of arrows on her back and a hunting dog at her side, "Kayserling" inscribed on stretcher, "pinx: F: E: Fhle. A 1779" on reverse of canvas, gilt frame. Late 18th/early 19th c. 38" x 30" image, 41 1/2" x 33 1/2" overall. Excellent condition, several small old repairs, minor paint loss at bottom.

  • LEADED GLASS SHADE ELECTRIC TABLE LAMP ATTRIBUTED TO HANDEL (Lot #1289 - $2,860), umbrella shade with green glass field and five groupings of three red flowers around rim, no visible markings, bronze two-light base with original cap and cloth Handel label. First quarter 20th c. 20 1/2" h overall, 16" d shade. Excellent condition.

  • EDWARDIAN INLAID MAHOGANY ENCLOSED DRESSING TABLE (Lot #1292 - $3,630), rectangular hinged top with double fold-out beveled mirrors and light sconces, fitted and fold-out interior retaining most of it's original matching London silver and cut glass accessories, two drawers and tapered legs with brass casters, string inlays, labeled "Maple & Co., Limited". Early 20th c. 37 1/2" h, 22 1/2" x 35". Excellent condition.

  • AUGUSTA CO. VA CHIPPENDALE WALNUT CORNER CUPBOARD (Lot #1296 - $6,050), ogee molded cornice over two double fielded panel doors, applied waist molding, two lower fielded panel doors, applied cut-out bracket feet. Yellow pine secondary wood. Fourth quarter 18th c. 98" h, 49" wide, 33 1/2" corner. Excellent overall condition, replaced H hinges, several small repairs, small loss to cornice return.

  • RARE LABELED VIRGINIA SHERATON WALNUT DINING TABLE (Lot #1299 - $3,300), rectangular top with two hinged drop leafs, supported on six boldly turned legs, two of which swing out to support the leafs, original printed label for John B. and George R. Weber, Shepherdstown, Va., active circa 1820. First quarter 19th c. 29" h, 22 1/2" x 45", 61" long open. Excellent condition.

  • OUTSTANDING PHILADELPHIA GOTHIC CAST IRON GARDEN GATE AND POSTS (Lot #1341 - $5,170), arched with fox and glove motif, signed "Wood, Phila". Mid 19th c. Gate 54" h, 30" w, posts 71" h overall including lower in-ground sections. Excellent condition.

  • LADY'S PLATINUM DIAMOND AND SAPPHIRE VINTAGE RING (Lot #1346 - $5,170), featuring an old European cut center diamond of approximately .91ct, surrounded by twelve tapered faceted bauguette sapphires, and twenty round brillant cut melee diamonds set in the ornate filigree mounting. Accompanied by a current appraisal of $8,300. Circa 1920's. Excellent condition.

    Provenance: Property of a prominent Waynesboro family.

  • LADY'S 18K YELLOW GOLD EMERALD AND DIAMOND PENDANT ON CHAIN (Lot #1354 - $2,860), featuring an old European cut center diamond of approximately .91ct, set with a center emerald of approximately 11.39ct surrounded by round brilliant cut diamonds of approximately 1.08ct total weight. Second half 20th c. Accompanied by a current appraisal of $5,400. Excellent condition.

  • VICTORIAN GLASS SUGAR SHAKER (Lot #1404 - $2,970), Daffodils, blue opalescent. First quarter 20th c. 5" h. Undamaged, lid with some rust.

    Note: This is an unlisted form in Heacock/Elmore "Opalescent Glass from A-Z".

  • DUTCH VENEER AND MARQUETRY BUREAU (Lot #1423 - $5,225), hinged fall front concealing a fitted interior, restrained serpentine front with three full length drawers with cast handles and escutcheons, simple bracket feet, inlaid all-over with mythological figures, cherubs and scrolling foliage. Mid 18th c. 41" h, 22 1/2" x 45 1/2". Excellent overall condition, old repairs to end cracks, some minor losses.

  • CONTINENTAL NEOCLASSICAL GILTWOOD AND GESSO PIER MIRROR (Lot #1424 - $1,540), crest features urn, draped swags and pineapple finials, rope molded frame with rosette corner blocks, swag and foliage below. Late 18th/early 19th c. 82" h, 31" wide. Excellent overall condition with some minor losses.
