  • CAST IRON FIGURAL DOORSTOP (Lot #1067 - $2,300), "Sketches of the Life of Captain Hugh A. White, of the Stonewall Brigade." By his Father, Columbia, S.C.: South Carolinian Steam Press, 1864. Original paper wraps, 124 pages. Excellent condition, some light pencil margin markings, normal foxing.

  • CAST IRON FIGURAL DOORSTOP (Lot #1253 - $1,300), Art Deco clown, original red, white, blue and black paint. First half 20th c. 10 1/2" h. Excellent condition, minor wear and chipping to paint.

  • GOOD CHILD'S WOODEN BUCKBOARD WAGON (Lot #1290 - $1,700), original seat, wooden tongue and wood spoke wheels, original dark green and yellow paint with two landscape panels. Late 19th c. 21" h, 17 1/2" wide, 40" long. Excellent original condition, several side braces replaced.

  • VINTAGE DOLL, TETE JUMEAU (Lot #1321 - $2,200), bisque head marked "Tete Jumeau, Bte SGDG 1," brown stationary eyes, closed mouth, pierced ears without earrings, jointed composition body with jointed wrists, possibly original wig, redressed, no shoes, old bonnet. Fourth quarter 19th c. 17" l. Head undamaged, body and limb damage with repaint.

  • VINTAGE DOLL, SIMON HALBIG DOLLY FACE LADY DOLL (Lot #1326 - $1,450), bisque head, marked "1159 Germany Simon & Halbig 8 S & H,", set blue glass eyes, open mouth, lady body, ball jointed, composition and wood body, human hair wig, pierced ears, appropriate clothing including corset. Fourth quarter 19th c. 22". Chips on ears, some wear.

  • FINE WOOD AND PORCELAIN STORE COAT RACK (Lot #1499 - $2,300), wooden center post with large ball finial, mounted with a circular nickel plated ten hook coat rack, lower circular shelf with nickel plated rail, supported by a heavy ribbed porcelain base. Late 19th/early 20th c. 88" h, 31" largest diameter. Excellent condition.



Pottery

  • EXTREMELY RARE AND IMPORTANT J. EBERLY & CO. (ATTRIBUTED), STRASBURG, VIRGINIA, POLYCHROME GLAZED LAMB DOORSTOP (Lot #1 - $58,000), strongly molded with exceptional colors having lead, manganese and copper glaze over a slip wash. 3 1/4" h, 12" long. Outstanding condition with less than normal high spot glaze wear and exfoliation.

    Note: This is a previously undocumented example of this extremely rare lamb and only the fifth specimen that I have been able to locate. Known examples include the above referenced along with the specimen from the Deyerle collection, Sotheby's lot #563. The example we are offering is of superior color to those illustrated and provides a rare opportunity to obtain one of the great icons of American folk pottery.

  • RARE ISAAC GOOD (ROCKINGHAM CO., VA.), EARTHENWARE JUG (Lot #2 - $3,250), approximately 1/2 gallon, mottled lead and manganese glaze, boldly formed lip. 9" h. Some glaze wear and light exfoliation.
    Note: This is the first Isaac Good jug that I have observed.

  • RARE ISAAC GOOD (ROCKINGHAM CO., VA.), EARTHENWARE JUG (Lot #6 - $3,500), two applied lug handles, with original lid, incised "Plum", cobalt free-hand leaf decoration on front and reverse. 6 3/4" h overall, 4 1/2" d rim. Several cracks in reverse from base to shoulder.

  • JOHN BELL, WAYNESBORO, EARTHENWARE CAKE MOLD (Lot #13 - $4,900), mottled lead and manganese glaze, swirled form, signed below rim. 6 1/2" h, 9 1/2" d. Undamaged.

  • COWDEN & WILCOX, HARRISBURG, PA, DECORATED STONEWARE BATTER PAIL (Lot #20 - $2,200), approximately 1 gallon, strong cobalt free-hand fern wreath decoration, stamp filled with cobalt, rope rim with original bail handle, applied lug handle on reverse. 8" h, 5 1/2" d. Reverse with rim chip and 2 1/2" tight hairline, small inner rim chip.

  • VIRGINIA PAINTED KIDNEY BASKET (Lot #48 - $2,700), low handle, exceptional original worn dry blue-green paint. Late 19th c. 6" h handle, 4 3/4" h rim, 6" x 9". Exceptional untouched original condition.
    Provenance:
    Found in Charlottesville, Va.

  • NORTH CAROLINA CHINTZ CENTRAL MEDALLION QUILT (Lot #75 - $1,300), appliqued cut-out floral center with leaf quilting signed "S.A.E. Stevens", framed by two rows of eight pointed pieced stars and a diagonal block outer border, shades of blue, light red and earthtone colors, all-over hand stitched quilting, four panel homespun backing. Second quarter 19th c. 92" square. Minor deterioration to chintz and light staining.
    Provenance:
    Property of a direct descendant of S.A.E. Stevens, (died 1886 at age 65) who lived and is buried in Wilson, North Carolina.

  • IMPORTANT WATERCOLOR AND GOUACHE ON PAPER PAINTING OF NATURAL BRIDGE (Lot #191 - $3,500), attributed to Isaac Weld, Junior, Irish, 1774-1856. Believed to be the original source for the engraving "View of Rock Bridge", facing page 220 in volume I of Weld's "Travels Through the States of North America and the Provinces of Upper and Lower Canada During the Years 1795, 1796 and 1797," which was originally published in 1799. Late 18th c. 14" x 9 1/2". Exceptional condition, light remnants of glue on reverse.

  • P. BUCKLEY MOSS ORIGINAL 1975 WATERCOLOR (Lot #195 - $2,500), landscape with deer, painted in the round, signed l.r. Museum framed with four mats, library control #92.00159. 10 1/2" d image, 20 1/2" square overall.

Furniture

  • EXCEPTIONAL FOLK ART CARVED HIGHLAND COUNTY VIRGINIA EMPIRE WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS (Lot #258 - $5,000), rectangular top with applied molding, surmounted by a carved backsplash consisting of a central swan's neck pediment with carved human face and finial, flanked on either side by carved half fans and acorn topped turned end posts. Case having a large slightly over hanging top drawer flanked by narrow inlaid maple columns, three graduated lower drawers, all drawers dovetailed and nailed with applied cock beading and protruding dogwood escutcheons, ebonized turned half columns, scalloped skirt and tall turned feet, panelled ends. White pine and linden secondary woods. Retains an old dry finish with varying degrees of original feather grained decoration. Second quarter 19th c. 56" h overall, chest 45" h, 21" x 38 1/2" case. Excellent original condition, missing one swan's neck rosette and two glass knobs.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY SHERATON WALNUT SIDE BOARD (Lot #266 - $5,250), rectangular top with heavy molded edge, applied dovetailed gallery having cut-out scroll fronts, three upper dovetailed scratch beaded drawers which very slightly overhang four fielded panel scratch beaded lower doors, heavy reeded flat columns divide and flank doors, solid ends, base frame with heavy molding and six heavy turned feet, arranged with four in the front and two in rear. Yellow pine secondary wood. Nicely figured drawer fronts and door panels, replaced glass drawer knobs and escutcheons. First quarter 19th c. 46 1/2" h overall, 43" h to top, 68" long, 21" deep. Excellent condition, one minor patch.

  • VIRGINIA CHIPPENDALE WALNUT SINGLE PIECE CORNER CUPBOARD (Lot #273 - $5,500), heavy molded cornice over two six pane doors retaining their original glass, heavy applied waist and side moldings, two lower raised panel doors, applied base molding and cut-out bracket feet, very unusual reverse raised panel back. Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. Late 18th c. 79 1/2" h, 53" wide, 24" deep. Excellent condition, two minor patches, added brass escutcheon.

  • FINE DIMINUTIVE SHENANDOAH VALLEY YELLOW PINE PIE SAFE (Lot #282 - $5,500), rectangular top with a high dovetailed gallery having cut-out ends, over two doors each set with two tins having a boldly punched six petal within circle design, two lower half length dovetailed drawers with molded raised panel facings, fielded panel ends, case posts extend to tall square feet with applied cut-out scalloped front corner brackets. Interior with single medial shelf and unusual half-dept upper shelf. Poplar and yellow pine secondary woods. Retains a wonderful original dry dark surface with excellent wear, tins with original dark green flaking paint. Mid 19th c. 57" h overall, 52" h top, 16 1/2" x 42" case. Exceptional untouched condition, two minor cracks in door frames.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY CHIPPENDALE DIMINUTIVE HANGING CORNER CUPBOARD (Lot #288 - $8,000), cove molded cornice over applied ogee molding which continues down sides and across base, single six pane door, deeply fluted stiles and returns. Interior having two shaped upper shelves and one lower shelf, all with plate grooves, interior retains its original worn dark green paint. Yellow pine secondary wood. Fourth quarter 18th c. 39" h, 30" wide, 15" deep. As found condition. Exterior has been partially cleaned, shows signs of original H hinges but now with old iron butt hinges, some loss to base molding. Back has been off and re-nailed, which probably occurred at some point when the cupboard was removed from a wall.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY FEDERAL WALNUT ONE PIECE CORNER CUPBOARD (Lot #312 - $2,900), cove molded cornice over two scratch beaded doors, each having eight panes, two scratch beaded fielded panel lower doors, high cut-out bracket feet and scalloped skirt. Yellow pine secondary wood, replaced H hinges. First quarter 19th c. 86 1/2" h, 54" wide, 25 1/2" deep. Excellent condition, some old patching at nail heads.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY HEPPLEWHITE INLAID WALNUT CHEST OF DRAWERS (Lot #342 - $2,400), rectangular top with applied thumbnail moldings, four graduated dovetailed scratch beaded drawers with simple string inlay, applied base moldings and French style bracket feet. Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods, replaced brasses. Late 18th c. 38 1/2" h, 19" x 40" case. Excellent refinished condition, one front foot to be reattached, one spur and tip of one rear foot replaced.

  • VICTORIAN BILLIARDS TABLE (Lot #363A - $5,000), attributed to J. M. Brunswick & Balke, "Brilliant Novelty" model, burlwood veneer with allover marquetry inlay, three section slate top and leather pockets, stamped "19162" on wooden underframe. Fourth quarter 19th c. 50" x 96" bed. Excellent overall condition, some veneer loss, top disassembled.

  • GEORGE II MAHOGANY THREE SECTION BANQUET TABLE (Lot #384 - $2,900), dropleaf gateleg center section with two demi-lune ends, shaped skirt, turned tapering legs with club feet. Mid 18th c. 28" h, 48" wide, 69" long overall closed, 103" long overall open. Excellent overall condition, one leg repaired.

  • WILLIAM III JAPANNED OAK CHEST-ON-STAND (Lot #387 - $2,200), upper section with a molded cornice above a cushion-molded frieze drawer, two half length drawers over three graduated lower drawers, lower section with single full length drawer and bulbous turned feet. Gold on black chinoiserie, floral and lattice decoration. Oak and pine secondary woods, concealed compartment in upper case, replaced hardware. Late 17th/early 18th c. 62 1/2" h, 25" x 42 1/2". Alterations to stand, some old insect damage and minor repairs, otherwise excellent condition.

  • SPATTERWARE SOUP BOWL, ACORN PATTERN (Lot #281 - $2,800), twelve sided with three dark brown acorns, black stems and green leaves, wide purple spatter border. Second quarter 19th c. 10 1/2" d.

  • SPATTERWARE TEAPOT, RAINBOW (Lot #286 - $2,600), bulbous body decorated with purple and black spatter stripes, handle and spout with purple spatter. Second quarter 19th c. 5" h, 4" d at widest. Small flakes on spout.

  • SPATTERWARE PLATE, BULL'S EYE PATTERN (Lot #293 - $1,150), blue and purple spatter. Second half 19th c. 9 1/2" d. Small area of glaze exfoliation restored on front, repaired spall on back.

  • SPATTERWARE PLATE, BULL'S EYE PATTERN (Lot #296 - $1,150), red and purple spatter. Second quarter 19th c. 9 1/2" d. One rim chip on front of plate, one on back.

  • SPATTERWARE TEAPOT, THISTLE PATTERN (Lot #322 - $1,800), light red flower with green leaves, overall yellow spatter. Second quarter 19th c. 5 1/4" h, 6 1/4" d. No lid, old repairs to rim and spout.

  • SPATTERWARE PLATE, STAR PATTERN (Lot #325 - $900), red, blue and green six pointed star with wide medium blue spatter border. Second quarter 19th c. 9 1/2" d. Undamaged except for very light discoloration.

  • PAPERWEIGHT, BOUQUET ON DOUBLE SWIRLED LATTICINIO, ATTRIBUTED TO NEW ENGLAND GLASS CO. (Lot #457 - $1,600), central complex cane surrounded by red, blue and white flowers seperated by single canes, seven deep green veined leaves. Third quarter 19th c. 2 1/4" h, 2 3/4" d. Light surface scratches and several tiny bumps.

  • PAPERWEIGHT, OPEN CONCENTRIC COLORGROUND MILLEFIORI, ATTRIBUTED TO CLICHY (Lot #460 - $1,500), central pastry mold cane surrounded by two rings, the outer containing Clichy rose canes, set on an opaque turquoise ground. Second half 19th c. 1 1/2" h, 2 1/4" d. Undamaged.

  • IRONSTONE MORNING GLORY/TEALEAF FIVE PIECE COFFEE SERVICE (Lot #505 - $1,200), unmarked Elsmore and Forster Portland Shape, coffee pot with lid having vent hole, tea pot with lid, sugar bowl with lid, cream jug and waste bowl. Mid 19th c. 4 1/4" to 11 1/4" h. Finials on coffee and tea pots possibly reattached, otherwise very minor imperfections.

  • FLOW BLUE PARTIAL DINNER SET (Lot #572 - $1,200), forty-nine pieces, consisting of eight each 9" d plates, sauce dishes, butter pats, cups and saucers, three nested platters, covered butter dish with insert, round serving bowl, round serving plate, small jug, sugar and creamer, marked under glaze "J & G Meakin, Hanley, England" and "Balmoral". Early 20th c. Some pieces with minor to moderate damage.

  • STEUBEN SET OF TWELVE DINNER PLATES (Lot #646 - $800), topaz with two applied blue rim bands, four with polished bases signed with acid fleur-de-lis marks, eight unsigned with polished pontils. First half 20th c. 10 3/4" d. One with some outer band loss, two with scratches on reverse.

  • ROYAL DOULTON "POMEROY" DINNER SERVICE (Lot #716 - $1,650), one hundred twelve pieces, D5270, fourteen dinner plates, thirteen luncheon/salad plates, sixteen bread and butter plates, eleven soup bowls, eleven square dessert plates, thirteen cups and fourteen saucers, ten demitasse cups with twelve saucers, two oval platters, two oval serving bowls, sauce boat with attached undertray, teapot, creamer and sugar. Fifteen pieces with minor imperfections.
