Flint Stemware from the Pollard Collection
Flint Tableware
- DIAMOND POINT (Lot #92 - $1,760), covered pomade, fiery opalescent powder blue. Boston and Sandwich Glass Co. 5 7/8" h overall, base 3 7/8" h, 2 1/2" d. Base with a bruise and an area of flaking on rim interior, cover with a bruise and several tiny flakes on rim interior.

- GAINES/HAIRPIN (Lot #107 - $770), three piece table set, covered butter, spooner and covered sugar, fiery opalescent. Boston and Sandwich Glass Co.
4 1/2" to 7 1/4" h. Normal annealing lines, small flakes on rim of butter and sugar bases.

- GRANT AND WILSON (Lot #169 - $660), goblet. 6 1/8" h. Open bubble on edge of foot.

Drinking Vessels from the
Pollard Collection
- ASHBURTON - CUT (Lot #317 - $687.50), claret, medium emerald green, cut sixteen point star under foot. 4 3/4" h. Undamaged.
- HISTORICAL - PRESSED FLINT (Lot #384 - $770), Ashburton Union tumbler, all upper ovals embossed with varying vignettes including ÒUnionÓ within laurel wreath, pyramidal stack of muskets, military tents with flag, Native American warrior seal, unfurled American flag, American eagle seal, and ordinance with flag, polished pontil. 3 3/8" h, 3 1/8" d rim, 2 1/4" d base. Undamaged, one base corner lightly polished probably at factory.
Note: A very scarce tumbler.
- HISTORICAL - PRESSED FLINT (Lot #385 - $935), Civil War footed tumbler, applied short stem and circular foot, one side embossed with cannon, trench mortar, tamping rod and cannon balls with flag flying above, reverse with spread wing American eagle with breast shield, one talon holding a long sword and the other with a flag pole and unfurled thirty-four star flag, liberty pole with cap covers both mold lines, polished pontil. 6 1/4" h, 3 1/4" d rim, 3" d foot. Undamaged.

Note: Previously unrecorded.
Lighting
- CUT DOUBLE OVERLAY (Lot #441 - $2,750), stand lamp, white over clear over dark emerald green, cut in a star, quatrefoil and ovals design, brass connector to an opaque white No. 40 base having fiery opalescent highlights, Ò40Ó and Ò5 1/2Ó impressed under base. Boston and Sandwich Glass Co., 1860-1880. 14" h. Original and undamaged, normal annealing lines in base.
- CUT DOUBLE OVERLAY (Lot #442 - $2,420), stand lamp, white over clear over light red with swirled opaque white stripes, pear-shaped font cut with a band of single elongated vertical ovals separated by vertical stacks of three small ovals, horizontal band around lower section, clear wafer to an embossed brass stem and square black marble base. Attributed to the shop of Nicholus Lutz, Boston and Sandwich Glass Co., 1870-1880. 10" h. All original, the font is as it left the factory with an open bubble and several minor abrasions, marble has a flat chip on side of one corner plus normal minor flakes/wear.

Note: An extremely rare and previously unrecorded combination of overlay and latticinio-type glass.
- TULIP FONT (Lot #483 - $3,850), pair of stand lamps, starch blue and clambroth, attached by a wafer to an unlisted base having an octagonal double knop standard and double step square foot with eighteen beads, light sand surface. With brass burners stamped ÒC. A. Van Kirk & Co. Patent July 17, 1860Ó. Possibly Boston and Sandwich Glass Co. 13 1/2" h overall, 12" h lamps, 4 1/2" sq. base. Exceptional condition, one base having a bruise underneath, the other base with an open bubble and corner bruise.

Note: A previously unrecorded and important pair of lamps.
- AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT AND UNIQUE MATCHED PAIR OF BLOWN MOLDED AND PRESSED WHAILE OIL LAMPS (Lot #490 - $18,700), blown molded globular fonts, each with twelve flutes around lower section and pronounced ribs between each flute, well executed button knop stems and heavy pressed Diamond Pinwheel toddy plate bases. Boston & Sandwich Glass Co., 1828-1830. 6 1/2" h, 4 7/8" d base. Condition is outstanding, both have light scratches in the lower section of font, both bases have several vertical flakes on scallop tips and very light mold roughness, none of which disfigures.

Note: This spectacular pair of previously unrecorded lamps was discovered last year in a home near New York City. They are closely related to the pair of candlesticks with free blown sockets, blown molded stems and identical toddy plate bases, one of each formerly in the collections of William Elsholz and Scott Hambidge. The Elsholz example was exhibited at Corning in 1954 and the Henry Ford Museum in 1960, while the Hambidge example was included in the 1995 exhibit ÒSensational Sandwich.Ó They represent one of the most important discoveries in the field of early American glass in the last 20 years.
Early Colored
& Colorless
- PRESSED TULIP (Lot #528 - $10,450), vase, spectacular deep brilliant teal or blue-green, wafer to a hexagonal base with upper knop. Boston and Sandwich Glass Co.
10 7/8" h, 5 1/4" d rim. Exceptional condition having only a shallow vertical chip on two base points and a flat chip under the base which does not disfigure.

- PRESSED TULIP (Lot #541 - $4,675), vase, brilliant deep amethyst, panels on lower section of bowl stop before they meet standard leaving a narrow horizontal unpatterned area, wafer to an octagonal base. Boston and Sandwich Glass Co. 10" h, 5 3/4" d rim, 4 3/8" d foot. Flaking/roughness on one base lower point and an open bubble on another, otherwise undamaged.

Pressed Lacy
- HAIRPIN (Lot #555 - $4,125), tray in the shape of a peacock, clear, closed handle, extremely rare. Boston and Sandwich Glass Co. 1 3/8" h, 8" x 9 1/4". All damage is confined to the front and back edges of tray, most occurring upon removal from mold, none of which disfigures the profile. Front with one small spall, three scallops with a small top edge chip plus some mold roughness, also several small areas of light wear on high spots. Reverse with three chips under handle, one point with chip, several scallops with back edge chips along with mold roughness. Nowhere near as bad as it sounds.

Early Cut
& Engraved
- FREE-BLOWN WITH ENGRAVED DECORATION (Lot #810 - $1,760), pint jug, clear non-lead glass with slight blue tint, baluster form, crude applied solid handle with spur-like thumb tab at top, applied circular foot with small deep open pontil, decorated with floral swags, love knots and vines. Mid-Atlantic, possibly Maryland. 6 1/4" h overall, 5" d body, 3 3/8" d foot. Undamaged, small touch of extra glass on side.

Note: An accompanying 1986 correspondence from Arlene Palmer Schwind contains a photo of a jug of exact form and closely related decoration. Ms. Schwind observed,
ÒI believe the pitchers are similar enough to warrant an attribution to the same source. Back in 1977 when I examined the pitcher enclosed I felt it emanated from the mid-Atlantic area, possibly Maryland and was made in the early 19th century.Ó
Pattern, Pillar
& Blown Molded
- PILLAR MOLDED (Lot #917 - $2,970), vase, deep brilliant cobalt blue lead glass, eight ribs strongly swirled to right at rim, gaffered rim folded inward, applied solid stem with compressed knop, circular foot with pontil. Probably Pittsburgh. 8 7/8" h, 5 1/4" d rim, 4 1/8" d foot. Small interior bruise near bottom of bowl, otherwise undamaged.

- FLASK (Lot #1077 - $4,125), GVIII-25, Sunburst, deep brilliant copper puce, half pint, plain lip, pontil. Probably Baltimore Glass Works. 5 3/4" h. Tiny no harm bruise on edge of base.

- BITTERS BOTTLES (Lot #1135 - $9,900), embossed ÒWheelerÕs Berlin Bitters BaltimoreÓ, brilliant deep yellow green, hexagonal form with two blank panels, applied lip and large rough pontil, nicely whittled surface. 9 3/4" h, 3 3/8" d base. Exceptional condition having only a very tiny shallow flake on lip plus two pinhead flakes and a hint of wear around base.
Provenance: This was recently found by our staff in a local estate.
18th and 19th
Century Ceramics
- HISTORICAL DECORATED (Lot #1181 - $1,760), late, pearlware with embossed blue feather edge rim, center with freehand polychrome enamel spread wing eagle, shield on chest, holding arrows and olive branch in talons, eleven stars above. Unmarked. 5 7/8" d. Undamaged, several areas of light discoloration.
Provenance: The Charles Rand Penney Collection.
- PRATT WARE (Lot #1327 - $1,045), ramÕs head form stirrup cup, traditional polychrome enamel decoration, sprig band around rim. 4 1/2" h, 3 1/4" d. Spot of glaze exfoliation on nose.

- PEARLWARE - TRANSFER DECORATED (Lot #1338 - $1,100), punch bowl, blue transfer printed with Blue Willow type pattern, circular form with flange foot, unmarked. 5 1/8" h, 13 1/8" d. Undamaged.

- MOCHA (Lot #1359 - $1,045), tankard can, two dark brown bands with white chain decoration, small blue and green horizontal rings. 6" h, 4 1/4" d. Rim chips and overall discoloration.
