  • IMPORTANT A. KEISTER & CO., STRASBURG, VA., DECORATED STONEWARE PITCHER (Lot #1 - $21,000), 3 gallon capacity mark, exuberant floral cobalt free-hand decoration, unique "rat tail" handle. 14 1/2" h. 8" base d. Separation on rim from stone in clay, small stone flake out of side.

    Note: Pitchers of this size are rare. No potteries whose price lists are reprinted in Comstock offered this size pitcher.

  • ANDREW COFFMAN, ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VA STONEWARE JAR (Lot #2 - $3,100), approximately 1/2 gallon, straight-sided, impressed "A. Coffman, Rockigham [sic], Va". 8 1/2" h. 4 1/2" d. One 2" chip off rim.
    Reference: Mark as Comstock 6.11.
    Provenance: The Marjorie and Duell Glover Collection, Winchester, Va.
    Note: An extremely rare signed example from the father of Rockingham County pottery. Even though he was an active potter for over 30 years, remarkably only a handful of signed examples are known to exist.

  • JOHN D. HEATWOLE, ROCKINGHAM COUNTY, VIRGINIA, DECORATED STONEWARE SQUAT POT WITH LID (Lot #3 - $5,900), two lug handles, cobalt free-hand floral decoration on two sides, cobalt 1 1/2 under one handle, flat lid with foot and turned finial, unsigned. 9 1/2" h. with lid, 5 1/2" d. Small chip off one handle, small flake off one side, flakes off underside of lid.
    Provenance: Helen M. Keagy Estate, Mt. Crawford, Va.
    Note: An exceptional example of a rare and desirable Rockingham County form.

  • JOHN BELL LEAD-GLAZED EARTHENWARE MOLDED HANGING PLANTER (Lot #4 - $5,250), stamped "John Bell", mottled glaze on exterior, with chain. 7" h. 9 1/2" d. Undamaged.
    Reference: Mark as Comstock 4.142a.

  • AN EXTREMELY IMPORTANT EARTHENWARE FIGURE OF A SEATED BEAR WITH CUBS ATTRIBUTED TO ANTHONY W. BAECHER, WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA (Lot #7 - $27,000), holding one cub and remnants of another in arms, two cubs on back, open legs and tail, hollow body with applied clay coleslaw fur, brown slip glaze. 15 1/2" h. 11" d. 7" w. Along with the aforementioned loss, a back cub is missing its head, also some losses to the ends of ears, tail and feet.
    Reference: Wiltshire, "Folk Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley", plate 56, illustrates a closely related smaller example from the Abby Aldrich Rockefeller Folk Art Collection which is also damaged.
    Comstock, "The Pottery of the Shenandoah Valley Region", page 179, also illustrates the AARFAC bear along with another much smaller example.
    Two related bears were part of the Rice & Stoudt collection (#1653 and #1654) and are described on page 252 of their volume "The Shenandoah Pottery". They obtained one example, which they described as "more or less damaged", at the Baecher home from J. P. Baecher, the potter's son. One bear can be seen at the right side of the illustration on page 84.

  • VIRGINIA DECORATED OVOID STONEWARE JAR (Lot #18 - $6,750)4 gallons, two lug handles, cobalt free-hand "4", incised and cobalt decorated male profile with high collar and pony tail, inscribed "Johnny". 14 1/2" h. 7" d. Manufacturing separation on bottom.

  • ZIGLER POTTERY, TIMBERVILLE, VA (ATTRIBUTED) DECORATED STONEWARE OVOID JAR (Lot #52 - $1,600), approximately 1 gallon, two lug handles, three incised rings on shoulder, cobalt free-hand vine and leaf motif, with highlights at handles. 9 1/2" h. 5 1/2" d. Chip off rim, chip off of one corner on each handle.
    Provenance: Helen M. Keagy Estate, Mt. Crawford, Va.
    Note: The decoration and form is nearly identical to examples found in the basement of the John Zigler homestead and pottery site.



Decorative Accessories & Paintings

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY PAINTED FIELD BASKET (Lot #137 - $2,300), oblong elongated kidney form, heavy mortised oak end handles, old worn medium green over white paint. Late 19th c. 10" h, 14 1/2" x 27". Excellent condition.
    Provenance: Hickory Dale Farm (the old Clayton family home stead), Deerfield, Va.

  • NEEDLEWORK MEMORIAL PICTURE (Lot #139 - $6,250), silk embroidery and ink on silk, traditional scene of a willow tree, urn and mourning lady, inscribed "To The Memory of My Beloved Parents", in what appears to be it's original cherry string inlaid and block corner frame. First quarter 19th c. 13 1/2" x 10 1/2". Excellent condition having only a few Minor imperfections.
    Provenance: Information copied from family papers identifies this memorial as having been worked by Lucy Henry Davis (Massenberg) in memory of her parents, Archibald and Elizabeth Davis, Franklin and Warren counties, North Carolina. Abundant family genealogy is included with this lot.

  • VERY RARE BRASS SEWING DOG (Lot #144 - $1,900), recumbent collie on a worn cloth pad with grape patterned edge, thumb tab opens mouth, squared lower clamp with heart-shaped thumb screw. 4 1/2" h, 1 3/4" x 3 1/4". Wonderful original condition and dark patina.
    Provenance: Judith Guarini Estate, Charlottesville, Va.

  • JAMES MEREDITH, WINCHESTER, VIRGINIA, COIN SILVER SAUCE LADLE (Lot #170 - $550), "J Meredith" touchmark, end tipped forward, "MES" monogram. Second quarter 19th c. 6 1/2" long. Bowl with light denting.

  • TIFFANY STERLING "VINE" SUGAR SIFTER (Lot #171 - $450), gold washed pierced bowl, monogram on reverse. 7" long. Undamaged.

  • VICTORIAN OIL ON CANVAS PORTRAIT OF A DOG, SIGNED LUCY A. LEAVERS (Lot #209 - $2,200), attributed to Lucy A. Leavers, Nottingham, England, exhibited at the Royal Academy 1887-1898, in a period walnut burlwood frame. Fourth quarter 19th c. 25" x 20" image. Several old repairs.

  • WATERCOLOR ON PAPER, "IN BOTETOURT CY WEST VIRGA", SIGNED A. KOLLNER, JUNE 1845 (Lot #225 - $4,200), attributed to August Kollner, German, born Dusseldorf 1813, scene includes the artist dismounted from his horse with cane along with two young African-American boys in foreground, two-story brick institutional type building on hill. Second quarter 19th c. 10" x 13 1/2". Mounted on paper stock, some light foxing.
    Provenance: Property of a Virginia Educational Institution.
    Note: While information on this artist is very limited, several of his watercolors have been included in notable exhibits. The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts' "An Exhibition of Nineteenth Century Virginia Genre" 1946 exhibit included his "Natural Bridge in Virginia, 1845" from the Valentine Museum. More recently, the Virginia Historical Society's 2000 exhibit "The Virginia Landscape, A Cultural History" contained "Balcony Falls, James River, Virg. At the Blue Ridge Mountains, 1845" from their own collection along with "Lynchburg on the James River, Va., 1845", courtesy of the Maier Museum of Art, Randolph-Macon Woman's College, Lynchburg, Virginia. Both of the latter works are illustrated in the exhibit catalog by James C. Kelly and William M. S. Rasmussen, figures 4.11 and 4.92.

  • MOUNT WASHINGTON ROYAL FLEMISH VASE (Lot #279 - $3,400), bulbous form with gilded griffin decoration, unmarked. 10 1/2" h, 7 1/4" largest diameter. Undamaged, some surface marking.

  • R.S. PRUSSIA CARNATION MOLD TANKARD (Lot #285 - $1,400), carnation transfer and gilt decoration, red and green wreath mark. 13 1/4" h. Undamaged.

  • PAIR BACCARAT FIGURAL GLASS CANDLESTICKS (Lot #296 - $1,300), stems in the form of a cherub, frosted and clear, retaining their original hurricane shades with etched decoration, one stick signed under base. 22" h overall. Undamaged.



Furniture

  • THE WEADE/BARNHART FAMILY, AUGUSTA COUNTY, VIRGINIA FEDERAL WALNUT TALL CASE CLOCK (Lot #262 - $11,000), hood with bold broken arch pediment, three turned urn finials, arched door, four turned columns and round side lights, case with highly figured scalloped-top door, chamfered and lamb's tongue corners, lower fielded panel, boldly scalloped skirt and straight French feet, yellow pine secondary. Brass 8-day works, painted iron face with moon dial, second dial and date window, original pendulum, weights and key. Numerous interior repair signatures with the earliest being "Cleaned Feb. 4th, 1829, John Pittman". First quarter 19th c. 93" h, 20" wide hood, 13 1/2" wide waist, 17 3/4" wide base. Wonderful original condition with a pleasing dark finish.
    Reference: "Barnhart Family History, Augusta Co., Va. 1767-1967", page 111 and 214 records the history of this clock.
    Provenance: Henry Weade, miller at Patrick's Mill, on South River, four miles north of Waynesboro, Augusta Co. Mrs. Gideon (Martha Weade) Barnhart (1825-1917), received from her father c. 1867 W. Frank Patterson (1877-1939), received from his grandmother c. 1920 Marshall A. Firebaugh purchased at the Mrs. Frank (Ada Bowman) Patterson (1889-1967) Public Auction, Sept. 21, 1963.
    Note: A copy of the Barnhart Family History accompanies this lot as well as a clipped newspaper ad for the Patterson auction.

  • IMPORTANT HEPPLEWHITE INLAID MAHOGANY DEMI-LUNE CARD TABLE (Lot #264 - $5,500), attributed to Norfolk, Virginia, single swing leg supports folding top, front legs inlaid with an eagle in oval above triple-drop stylized bellflowers, other string and banded inlays. Poplar secondary wood. Late 18th c. 29 1/2" h, 36" wide, 18" deep. Good original as found condition, front legs with rear breaks at skirt, some banded inlay losses, old dark finish.
    Reference: See Sack's, "New Fine PointsÉ", page 285 top, for an identical example from the same shop.
    Provenance: Collection of the late Dorothy Lambert Mondell and Josephine Garland Lambert, Waynesboro, Va.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY CHIPPENDALE WALNUT HIGH CHEST OF DRAWERS (Lot #268 - $8,000), rectangular top with applied cove molding, three over five thumbnail molded and lipped drawers, fluted quarter columns, applied base moldings, supported by half-blind dovetailed bracket feet with a scalloped skirt, full bottom dust board. Original bail brasses and matching escutcheon plates. Poplar secondary wood. Fourth quarter 18th c. 54" h, 42 1/2" wide, 20 1/2" deep. With the exception of some normal drawer lip repairs and replaced end base molding, this chest is in wonderful original condition.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY COUNTRY EMPIRE WALNUT DIMINUTIVE SOLID END CHEST OF DRAWERS (Lot #272 - $6,000), rectangular top with applied half-round molding, unusual four over three cock beaded dovetailed drawer arrangement. Overhanging upper section having a center stack of two small drawers flanked by single side drawers and applied horizontal reeded stiles. Lower section having three graduated drawers with heavy reeded half-columns topped by finely scalloped and reeded crowns, half-round base molding and nicely turned feet. Original turned wooden knobs, full bottom dust board. Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. First quarter 19th c. 47" h, 21" x 36" case. With the exception of the two small knobs being replaced and one small old patch, this is in original untouched condition retaining a wonderful dark dry surface.

  • NORTH CAROLINA HEPPLEWHITE WALNUT SUGAR CHEST ON FRAME (Lot #276 - $4,750), rectangular lift-top with applied moldings, dovetailed box with partitioned interior, frame with applied top moldings and tall tapered legs, string and banded inlays on skirt and legs. Yellow pine secondary wood. Late 18th/early 19th c. 41 1/2" h, 37 1/2" w, 20 1/2" deep. Excellent condition with some old repairs/replacements.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY COUNTRY EMPIRE WALNUT SIDEBOARD WITH TEN PUNCHED TINS (Lot #297 - $10,000), rectangular top with applied blind dovetailed gallery, three dovetailed drawers above three doors, four applied turned half columns and six nicely turned feet, ends and doors each with two punched tins in a star and diamond pattern. Poplar, cherry and chestnut secondary woods. Mid 19th c. 47 3/4" h overall, 21 3/4" deep, 66" long. Excellent condition, one door frame with some damage at hinges.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY WALNUT TWELVE TIN PIE SAFE (Lot #300 - $4,100), rectangular top with simple gallery and moldings, two side-by-side dovetailed drawers over two doors, nicely turned legs, tins hand punched with a four-point star within an oval and corner fans. Yellow pine secondary wood. Mid 19th c. 54 1/2" h, 38 3/4" wide, 16 3/4" deep. Excellent condition, one end tin with minor damage.

  • NORTH CAROLINA HEPPLEWHITE WALNUT HUNTBOARD (Lot #306 - $10,000), rectangular top with applied cove molding over four dovetailed scratch beaded drawers, each having two turned wooden knobs, four lower scratch beaded paneled doors, one concealing bottle compartments, on high tapered legs, each end with double fielded panels. Yellow pine and poplar secondary woods. Period script inscription under left drawer "July 10 AD 1822" and two illegible lines below. Early 19th c. 43 1/2" h, 66" long, 21 1/2" deep. Excellent condition, some minor old repairs.

  • CAST IRON BRADLEY & HUBBARD RABBIT DOORSTOP (Lot #A149 - $4,100), wonderfully molded, sitting upright in clover and leaves, marked "B&H, 7800", great original paint. 15 1/4" h. Excellent condition.

  • CARVED AND PAINTED PATRIOTIC PICTURE FRAME (Lot #A167 - $1,600), two American flags and shell above an oval frame with scroll work below, red, white, blue, black and gilt paint, inscribed on reverse "Made by J. W. Nail 1929". 13" h, 9 1/4" wide. Excellent original condition and patina.

  • MOORCROFT POTTERY CENTER BOWL AND MATCHING CANDLESTICKS (Lot #A190A - $1,000), deep blue ground with fruit decoration, impressed "Moorcroft" and "Made in England", blue "W. Moorcroft" signature and paper label. Bowl 3 7/8" h, 8 1/2" d, sticks 6 1/2" h. Undamaged.

  • BURMANTOFTS ENGLISH ART POTTERY VASE (Lot #A204 - $1,000), bulbous bottle form with Persian style design, medial band of fish with scales above and below, impressed "Burmantofts Faience 11", free-hand monogram for V. Kremer and "Dsg 31 (903)". Late 19th c. 12" h, 7 3/4" greatest diameter. Undamaged, some deposits around base.

  • 1907 SAINT-GAUDENS $20 GOLD PIECE (Lot #A239 - $8,000), high relief, Roman numerals. AU.
