  • STONEWARE DECORATED OVOID JUG (Lot #1 - $15,500), approximately one gallon, stamped "A. E. Spencer", free hand cobalt floral decoration, attributed to Abraham Spencer, one of four African American potters working in the Shenandoah Valley (illustrated in Comstock, fig. 7.85). 11 5/8" h. Glaze exfoliation.
    Provenance: Ex collection: John Palmer.

  • STONEWARE DECORATED CROCK WITH TWO LUG HANDLES (Lot #2 - $9,000), stamped "4", free hand cobalt turkey. Found in Augusta County, Virginia, and attributed to Augusta or Rockingham County, Virginia. 12 7/8" h. Crack running down left side and across base.
    Provenance: Ex collection: Elmer Smith; J. Roderick Moore.

  • STONEWARE DECORATED TWO GALLON JAR (Lot #5 - $1,050), stamped "2" and "H. C. Smith Alexa", free hand cobalt decoration. 12" h. Hairline.

  • STONEWARE DECORATED FOUR GALLON JAR WITH TWO LUG HANDLES (Lot #19 - $1,500), stenciled "T. F. Reppert Greensboro PA" with eagle, free hand cobalt "4" with sprigs and three bands. 14 1/2" h. Small chip off one handle.

  • STONEWARE DECORATED PITCHER (Lot #22 - $1,950), approximately one half gallon, stamped "W. H. Lehew & Co., Strasburg, VA.", free hand cobalt tulip. 8 3/4" h. Four chips on base.

  • STONEWARE DECORATED PITCHER (Lot #23 - $1,600), approximately one half gallon, unmarked Baltimore, Maryland, free hand cobalt floral decoration. 8 3/4" h.

  • STONEWARE DECORATED ONE AND ONE HALF GALLON BATTER JUG (Lot #27 - $1,000), stamped "Evan R. Jones, Pittston, PA" and "1 1/2", free hand cobalt floral decoration, original bail and tin spout cover. 10 3/8" h. Small chip off spout.

  • STONEWARE DECORATED FOUR GALLON WATER COOLER (Lot #45 - $1,250), stenciled "James Hamilton & Co. Greensboro, PA." with flowers and a "4", later metal spout not attached. 14" h.

  • STONEWARE DECORATED ONE GALLON JAR (Lot #72 - $1,550), stamped "P. Herrmann 1G" and "From Scott & Kearsley Fredericksburg VA", minimal free hand cobalt leaf decoration. 10 1/4" h. Chips on rim.


Silver

  • STERLING, TRUMPET FORM VASE (Lot #115 - $1,000), marked "BSC" in a square, "Sterling" and "2068". Pierced with chased foliate design on upper quarter of vase, with design elements repeated on lower edge and on foot. Rim raised in four points. Early 20th c. Weight: 42 oz. 21" h, 7 7/8" dia. At foot. Excellent.

  • STERLING BOWL, REPOUSSE BORDER (Lot #116 - $500), marked "S Kirk & Son Inc. Sterling, 179", ornately monogrammed "AL" in center, 20th c. Weight: 18 oz. 2 1/4" h, 11" dia. Excellent.

  • STERLING SAUCE BOAT, REPOUSSE (Lot #117 - $550), marked "S. Kirk & Son Inc. Sterling, 278", "Hand Decorated", on foot, 20th C. Weight: 10 oz. 5 1/2" h to top of handle, 8 1/2" l overall. Excellent.

  • STERLING TEA SET (Lot #119 - $900), three pieces, tea pot, creamer and open sugar, marked "Sterling", no other marks, oval footed form, handles decorated with cornucopia, gadrooned bodies, claw feet, late 19th c. Weight: 55 oz. total. 4 1/2" to 6" h, 6" to 11 1/2" l overall. Excellent.

  • LONDON PLATE, ROUND COVERED SERVING BOWL (Lot #147 - $11,000), hallmarked London, 1787-1788, John Wakelin and William Taylor. Impressed "R. & S. Garrard, Patton St., London" on bottom. Small, triple wheat sheaf engraved on lid, flattened ball and claw feet, larger overlapping scroll bale handles, ornate crown finial. 12 1/4" h, 13" dia. Dent on rim of base.

  • SHEFFIELD PLATE, ORNATE OVAL COVERED SERVING BOWL (Lot #151 - $1,100), unmarked, large entwined grape vine handles and finial, engraved heraldic crest with stag and angel. 19th c. 10" h overall, 16 1/2" x 9 1/4". Excellent.


Saturday Catalogued Sale

  • ORIENTAL KIMONO (Lot #239 - $150), red brocade w/ blue lining. Early 20th c.

  • APPLIQUE QUILT (Lot #298 - $2,600), Rockbridge Co., VA "President's Wreath," dated and signed in quilting "EK" and "March 13 1856," nine blocks with wreaths, Vine border, all applique stuffed, red, green, teal blue and orange colors, quilting consists of man and woman holding hands, single hand, baskets with tulips, feathered wreaths, etc. 100" x 101". Minor repairs, stains, and fabric loss.

  • THE KLINE FAMILY SCHRANK (Lot #300 - $75,000), Rockingham Co. Va., late 18th c., walnut with southern yellow pine secondary, double ogee molded cornice, case having two double raised panel thumbnail-lipped doors hung on rattail hinges, doors are divided and flanked by narrow double recessed ogee molded panels, quarter column corners, double raised panel ends, lower section steps out slightly with heavy applied double molding at top, three lower thumbnail-lipped drawers, heavy applied ogee molding at base, interior with three shelves on left side and one shelf with hanging pegs below on right side, back consists of two sections, each having four raised panels, closely resembling house doors of the period, disassembles completely. 86 1/2" high, 72" wide at case, 82" wide at cornice. With the exception of changed locks and the loss of it's original ball-style feet, this piece is in a remarkable original state of preservation, including its original untouched dry surface, remnants of original drawer hardware, some insect damage to board under base.
    Provenance: This extremely rare Shenandoah Valley example has never passed out of the Kline family. Full provenance available.

  • HOOKED RUG (Lot #301 - $700), black and white cat reclining on a red covered table with tassels, striped background. Early 20th c. 29" x 35". Excellent condition.

  • MASSACHUSETTS HEPPLEWHITE MAHOGANY TRIPOD TILT-TOP CANDLESTAND (Lot #303 - $2,900), oval top retains it's original tole type decoration of fruit and birds with gilt scroll border, original dry surface. Late 18th c. 28" h, 17" x 26" top. Minor flaking to surface.

  • DIMINUTIVE VIRGINIA HEPPLEWHITE WALNUT INLAID SPLAY LEG STAND (Lot #304 - $3,600), top with center six point star, string outside border with corner four section quarter fans, double string blocked inlay around skirt, retains an old finish. Late 18th/early 19th c. 26 1/2" h, 14" x 14". Minor old repairs, leg cuff banding missing, minor inlay losses.

  • FOLK ART APPLIQUE MAT (Lot #305 - $1,000), red felt with two applied bold black wool prancing horses, white sawtooth stitching on a framed black mount. Late 19th/early 20th c. 23" x 67". Light fading to left horse, otherwise excellent condition.
    Provenance: Ex: Frank and Barbara Pollack.

  • HEPPLEWHITE MAHOGANY INLAID OVAL-TOP PEMBROKE TABLE (Lot #307 - $4,100), Mid-Atlantic region, white pine and oak secondary, top with string inlay on edge, legs with inlay blocks at top, stringing and banded cuffs, skirt with oval paterae, string panels and burnt triple match stick edge banding, retains an old if not original surface. Late 18th c. 28 1/2" h, 35" l, 21" w closed, 43 1/2" open. Losses to leg banding, some losses to inlay.

  • SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA WALNUT STEP-BACK CUPBOARD (Lot #311 - $2,500), in two parts, poplar secondary, upper section with two blind raised panel doors over two drawers, simple step molding, lower section with two doors each having two punched tins in a heart design. Mid 19th c. 78" h, 49 1/2" w, 18 1/2" d. Minor repairs to moldings.

  • PENNSYLVANIA SOAP HOLLOW DECORATED BLANKET CHEST (Lot #314 - $3,700), poplar dovetailed case with two lower drawers and bracket feet, original grained and stenciled decoration "C C 1849", black molding surrounding drawers, yellow painted quarter rounds in drawer face corners. 29" h, 49 1/2" l, 23 1/2" d. Some wear to decoration, base molding and feet repainted, minor repairs to feet.

  • GRAYSON COUNTY VIRGINIA WALNUT PIE SAFE (Lot #317 - $5,100), poplar secondary, two doors each having three punched heart and star tins above a lower dirty dish panel, ends with identical configuration, turned front feet with rear feet being square extensions of rear posts, old dry finish. First half 19th c. 55" h, 49 1/2" w, 18 1/2" d. Old patch to one end tin, minor insect damage to top and back.

  • SOUTHERN SHERATON CHERRY FOLK ART CARVED CHEST OF DRAWERS (Lot #320 - $2,100), yellow pine and poplar secondary, four graduated drawers with slightly overhanging top, top molding with central fluted panel, carved oval pateraes flanking upper drawer, fluted and reeded columns, each with central block having carved rising sun with face, front base molding with carved blocks, skirt with scratch carved vine and gouged leaves, turned feet, stamped brass knobs and escutcheons. First quarter 19th c. 44 1/2" h, 44" w, 22" d. Ends of feet restored, knobs are period replacements.
    Provenance: Collection of John and Lil Palmer.

  • PENNSYLVANIA PAINTED RUPP STYLE CORNER CUPBOARD (Lot #323 - $3,500), in two parts, poplar with grained paint, upper section with cove molded cornice over two six lite doors, flanked by turned acorn top half columns, lower section with center drawer flanked by false drawers, two lower panelled doors flanked by turned half columns, resting on turned feet. First half 19th c. 87 1/2" h, 58" w. 30" d. Cornice and rear foot replaced, other repairs.

  • DECORATED NEW ENGLAND BLANKET CHEST (Lot #326 - $1,200), white pine, original red paint with black freehand decoration on lid, front and ends, cut-out feet. Late 18th c. 23 1/2" h, 40" w, 19 1/2" d. Wear to paint on lid, one end base molding replaced.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY CHIPPENDALE WALNUT HIGH CHEST OF DRAWERS (Lot #329 - $3,100), yellow pine secondary, cove molded cornice over nine applied cock beaded drawers in a 3/2/4 arrangment, fluted quarter columns, shaped skirt and remnants of bracket feet, full dust boards, old finish. Late 18th c. 53" h, 42" w, 22" d. As found condition, losses to cornice and cock beading, composition Victorian pulls and escutcheons tacked/glued to drawer fronts, no extra holes drilled, other wear.
    Provenance: Descended in an old Rockbridge Co., Va. Family.

  • OHIO PAINTED DUTCH STYPE CUPBOARD (Lot #332 - $4,200), in two parts, poplar with original red wash, repainted mustard panels and trim, upper section with two doors each having double raised panels, pie shelf below, lower section with two thumbnail lipped drawers over two raised panel doors, cut-out skirt and ends, interior painted apple green. First quarter 19th c. 75 1/2" h, 50 1/2" w, 21 1/2" d base, 13" d top. Minor repairs.

  • TYRANUS JUNKUS SCULPTURE (Lot #334 - $3,700), from found materials by Edward Gilbertson, used as window display for the Tygard Furniture Store, Elkins WV, on wood platform. It was also displayed at the Charleston Civic Center for the Kanawha Rock & Gem Club Show in 1985. Mid 20th c. 87" long, 58" h, 70" h including base.
    Note: This sculpture was displayed at the Elkins Fall Festival and purchased by the owner of the furniture store where it was a window fixture for over 40 years.

  • NEW ENGLAND WINDSOR BENCH (Lot #345 - $2,100), mixed woods with tiger maple tablet crest, 37 bamboo turned spindles, turned arms with three spindles each, shaped single board seat, ten turned legs with stretchers. Early 19th c. 31 1/2" h, 91" l, 17" d. Excellent.

  • WASHINGTON CO. VIRGINIA WALNUT PIE SAFE (Lot #355 - $4,400), poplar secondary, old blue/green overpaint, single top drawer, twelve folk art punched tins with compote and hex signs, turned feet. Mid 19th c. Attributed to the Love family of cabinetmakers and tin decorators. See "Early American Homes", August 1996, pg. 13 for article by J. Roderick Moore. 54" h, 40 1/2" w, 17" d. Several end tins with some loss.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY DOVETAILED CHILD'S BLANKET CHEST (Lot 363 - $1,000) poplar scraped down to the original green paint, tall applied turned feet. First half 19th c. 13" h, 18" w, 12 1/2" d. Paint is very uneven.

  • ROCKBRIDGE CO. VIRGINIA SHERATON SERVER (Lot #369 - $1,800), walnut and yellow pine, one board top, two full length dovetailed drawers, tall turned legs, signed on upper drawer "Bullock." First half 19th c. 33 1/2" h, 37 1/2" x 21 1/2". Excellent.

  • VIRGINA FLATWALL KITCHEN SAFE (Lot #378 - $2,900), yellow pine and poplar, two upper fielded panel doors over two dovetailed waist drawers and two lower fielded panel doors, each end with two 19 1/2" x 14" tins finely punched with 1868, pineapples, flowers, etc., refinished, tins painted yellow. 77" h, 43" w, 18 1/2" d. Minor damage to two tins.

  • SHENANDOAH VALLEY CHERRY PIE SAFE (Lot #392 - $2,400), yellow pine and poplar secondary, two dovetailed drawers over two doors each with two punched tins in a double scrolled heart design, tall turned legs, each end with single squared raised panel. Mid 19th c. 54 1/2" h, 43 1/2" w, 20 1/2" d. Excellent.

  • AUGUSTA CO. VIRGINIA PIE SAFE (Lot #401 - $2,500), yellow pine and poplar, doors with three star punched tins, each end with two matching tins set in vertically, simple turned legs, overpainted over original blue. Mid 19th c. 55" h, 41" w, 18 1/2" d. Excellent.

  • ANTIQUE PERSIAN SAROUK (Lot #407 - $1,000), roomsize oriental rug. First half 20th c. 9' 6" x 12' 1".

  • CONTINENTAL TAPESTRY (Lot #415 - $6,500), gold shell and scroll border, framing a light blue secondary field, light rose main field with ornate central urn and cascading deep red, blue and other color flowers, red and blue parrots at bottom perched on a scroll and shell platform. Old fabric label on reverse written in period ink "Tapestry Panel 1" 80 x 1" 48 "Wernher." Late 18th/early 19th c. 71" x 53". Some minor fading and fabric separation.
    Provenance: Dorothy Lambert Mondell/Josephine Garland Lambert Estate.

  • ROCKINGHAM CO. VIRGINIA WALNUT PIE SAFE (Lot #422 - $2000), walnut and yellow pine secondary, back splash over two dovetailed drawers over two doors with three punched tins, turned feet, fielded panel ends. Mid 19th c. 55" h, 39 1/2" w, 17" d. Left door frame restored, replaced drawer knobs.

  • OIL ON CANVAS LANDSCAPE (Lot #436 - $1,900), river with canoe in foreground, cottage and forest with golden sunset, signed l.l. "C. P. Appel 1926," attributed to Charles P. Appel (American, 1857-1928), period frame. 17 1/2" x 40". As found uncleaned condition, one canvas indention, loss to frame.

  • SHERATON TIGER MAPLE AND BIRCH CHEST OF DRAWERS (Lot #455 - $2,100), four drawers with tiger maple fronts, ring turned and rope twist turret columns to turned feet, shaped backsplash, original stamped brass knobs. Early 19th c. 39" h, 42" w, 20" d. Excellent, minor damage to one drawer corner.

  • STAFFORDSHIRE TRANSFER, "FRUIT BASKET" (Lot #479 - $500), tree and well platter, light blue. Mid 19th c. 19 1/2" x 15 1/4".
    Provenance: Ex-Collection of John and the late Elizabeth Welker.

  • EMPIRE MAHOGANY ROUND DINING TABLE (Lot #503 - $3,100), four column pedestal to a four lobed base, opens to reveal an accordion type extension and turned center leg, with six leaves. First half 19th c. 28" h, 46" d, opens to 150". Excellent condition, three leaves need refinishing or repair.

  • STAINED GLASS WINDOW (Lot #514 - $850), classical design with column and C scroll border, center with foliate wreath and torch. Early 20th c. 84 1/2" h x 45" w. Excellent condition, minor cracks.

  • STAINED GLASS WINDOW (Lot #523 - $750), jeweled design of stylized cornucopias, urn and scrolls. Wood frame. Early 20th c. 26" h x 45" w. Excellent condition with minor cracks.

  • STAFFORDSHIRE DARK BLUE TRANSFER DEEP PLATTER (Lot #551 - $1,150), central scene of two shepherds, one playing flute, lady feeding two sheep, ram and ewe in foreground, two buildings in background overlooking a lake, floral border. Unmarked. Early 19th c. 14 x 18 1/2". Undamaged.

  • SEVRES BOLTED URN (Lot #552 - $1,550), blue ground with gilt and multicolor floral decoration, shoulder with bird decorated ovals below floral garland, cover with pineapple finial, blue mark with "y" in center. Late 18th c. 19 1/2" overall. Original bolt present but loose.

  • YELLOW PINE MULE CHEST (Lot 578 - $2,000), single board top, lidded till, two lower thumbnail lipped drawers, bracket feet, cut-out skirt. Early 19th c. 35 1/2" h, 50" w, 18 1/2" d. Old repairs and restorations.

  • nt. VIRGINA WALNUT JELLY CUPBOARD (Lot #581 - $3,000), yellow pine secondary, one board top with gallery, single drawer over two single board plank doors, cut-out arch base, original old worn black surface. Second half 19th c. 58" h, 41 1/2" w, 15" d. Excellent

  • N. CURRIER (Lot #606 - $1,500), "American Farm Scenes No. 1,". 23" h x 29" w. Good condition, margin tears and foxing.

  • PAINT DECORATED CANOPY POSTER BED (Lot #628 - $900), mixed woods, square chamfered posts, shaped headboard, solid plank type canopy, original red paint with green, yellow and white hex sign style decoration on headboard and canopy. 19th c. 74" h, 72" l, 51" w. Cracks to head and foot boards.

  • BUFFALO POTTERY "DELDARE" BOWL (Lot #647 - $350), "Ye Village Street," signed M. Geyhardt, marked "Made At the Buffalo Pottery 1909, Deldare Ware Underglaze." 3 1/4" h, 7 1/2" d. Undamaged.

  • BLOWN AND PRESSED GLASS WHALE OIL LAMP (Lot #652 - $225), blown light bulb form font, six ring wafer, triangle pressed base with shells, claw feet and interior prisms, brass two tube burner. First half 19th c. 9" h to collar. Mold roughness around base.

  • CAPO-DE-MONTE ARMORIAL PLATES (Lot #692 - $2,600), set of five, figural borders, various coats of arms in centers, blue underglaze "N" and crown mark. 19th c. 10 1/4" d. Undamaged.

  • JAPANESE IMARI PLATTER (Lot #704 - $350), pierced border with foliate decoration, overall orange and blue with gilt highlights, blue underglaze Japanese mark. 19th c. 9 1/2" x 12 1/2". Undamaged.

  • HEISEY #300 CRYSTAL CANDELABRA (Lot #756 - $700), pair, each with three arms and center cup, sockets screw into arms, bobeche with prism, arms unit screws into candlesticks. First half 20th c. 20 1/2" h, 12" dia. Overall. Undamaged.

C129.PHARMACY/JEWELER'S CABINET, two piece, cherry, upper section has full length beveled mirrored door which lifts up to reveal interior of small drawers with porcelain knobs.
